You will see first hand how these students work in their environment, create and collaborate with their peers. It is an incredible forum for matching your future engineering needs with the skills, work ethic and personalities of the next generation of budding young talent. CDS alumni are some of the most sought after college graduates on the planet. By participating in CDS programs, teams around the world are challenged by this hands-on design experience and workforce simulation to: • discover and resolve technical challenges in design, test, and manufacturing • know and compete within the limits of a rulebook of up to 85 pages • enhance their workplace communication and teaming skills • generate financial support for the project and solve business problems • author and present a final project report The Competitions Formula SAE Among the most demanding of the SAE Collegiate Design Series competitions, Formula SAE® (FSAE) challenges students to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with small formulastyle racing cars. Restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited to inspire creativity and imagination, to test knowledge, and to promote learning. Aero Design The ultimate engineering student challenge, Aero Design® includes two regional competitions that challenge participating teams to conceive, design, fabricate, and test a radio controlled aircraft that can take off, land, and optimally meet the mission requirements. Teams may participate in one or more classes of competition: Regular, Open and Micro, each presenting unique challenges. baja SAE Baja SAE includes three regional competitions that challenge engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain and in one competition, water. Expanded by popular demand! New Event! Formula SAE VIR has been added for 2008! In 2007, more than 2,600 students participated on 197 FSAE and FSAE West teams. Student participation in Aero Design has more than doubled since 1999! In 2007 more than 600 students participated on 96 teams. baja SAE—first held in 1976 — was the very first SAE CDS competition. In 2007, more than 2,100 students participated on 315 Baja teams. 4 “Formula SAE has been the single largest impact in my career. Every job I have had since graduation has been a direct result of my work on the FSAE™ car. The only reason my dream of working in the auto industry and for a professional race team was realized was due to my experience on the FSAE™ team. That is not to mention all the fun I had building and racing the car. This is how I honestly feel. It’s the best thing that I have ever done.” Matt Lewis Project Engineer Johnson Controls, Inc. “Nothing compares to practical, hands-on experience. Participating in SAE Aero Design provided invaluable networking opportunities. In fact, it was the contacts I made through this competition that opened the door to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. I took advantage of the face-to-face time with the engineers to find out first-hand accounts of what it was like to work at Lockheed Martin. If it were not for the exposure that the SAE Aero Design Competition afforded me, I would not have had the unique opportunity to demonstrate my abilities to my future employer.” Lea Haubelt Aeronautical Engineer - Structural Design Engineering Leadership Development Program Lockheed Martin Aeronautics “Honda R&D Americas, Inc. has supported the Baja SAE® program over the years because we see the result of what a team of engineers can accomplish together. The competition combines what they have learned in their engineering courses with a real world project from the beginning to the end. Being a member on one of the teams shows a strong interest in vehicles and also brings out the best of engineers who go beyond the normal engineering curriculum. As a long term sponsor of the Baja SAE® teams, we are able to meet excellent engineers who have the potential to become members of the Honda team. Because of our involvement, we have been able to build up a good rapport with the teams, advisors and other sponsors over the years.” Tamara Jenkins Human Resources Coordinator Honda R&D Americas, Inc.
