									Arthroscopic Knee Surgery Recovery Tips

Arthroscopic knee surgery is an advanced form of knee replacement, or simple knee
regeneration surgery. This procedure has advanced over previous procedures in terms of
the technology used, time consumed, post operation complications, and easy and quick
recovery. This has made it a popular choice among many patients suffering from knee
problems.

The simple but yet useful procedure is done by an orthopedic center of excellence, where
the patient is discharged the same day (4 to 5 hours) after the surgery. The Arthroscopic
knee surgery recovery period is short, but requires some diligent and conscious efforts
by the patient to attain normalcy quickly and avoid complications. The foremost advice
given by the surgeon to his patient after the arthroscopic surgery is:

     To try and keep the knee in elevated position for as much time as possible. This
         is necessary, especially during the first 2 to 3 days post-surgery;
     Swelling and pain are common and thus ice packs and some pain medications
         (only prescribed medicine should be consumed) are usually prescribed to comfort
         the patient. These problems subside soon as the knee tissues gain back health;
     The small incisions made during the surgery (around the knee) are closed with
         help of sutures or small band aids. The area is further covered with a temporary
         dressing which has to be changed regularly, as advised by the surgeon;
     The patient might start walking slowly around the house, but use of a walker or
         crutches is suggested as the treated knee is not yet ready to bear the body
         weight. The doctor will properly examine the pre and post operation condition of
         the knee to disclose the right time when the patient can start using the operated
         knee;
     The time of recovery is shorter than that after open knee surgery. At least 3
         weeks (or more depending on patient’s condition) period of rest is suggested
         before actually starting with daily activities which includes routine office work,
         driving etc.;
     The surgeon or the physician generally suggests a set of exercises which are
         necessary to regain the strength of the knee muscles and should be followed
         consciously. Help from a physiotherapist might be required (especially when the
         initial knee trouble was a severe or complex one)

Arthroscopic knee surgery recovery is easy and proves to be effective when the above
points and others suggested by the physician are followed carefully and completely. The
surgery has the least amount of post operation risks involved, and once recovered
completely, the patient can enjoy a healthy life.
