The State of Washington Department of Health (DOH) wellhead protection program's susceptibility rating is intended to be a site specific (well specific) determination of susceptibility of contamination to a well. The Spokane County Critical Aquifer Recharge Area (CARA) designation and rating of aquifer susceptibility is intended to be a determination of susceptibility of contamination to groundwater applied via analysis at a 40-acre grid. Critical Aquifer Recharge Area regulations within the Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) additionally protect wells for which DOH has provided certified data. Wellhead protection areas will be treated as high aquifer susceptibility designation unless the Director of Utilities accepts a hydrogeologic report showing low or medium aquifer susceptibility.

This map identifies the possible existence of wetlands, fish and wildlife habitats, geological hazard areas, or critical aquifer recharge areas. This map, in conjunction with site visits and other information, is the basis for requiring field investigations such as wetland reports, fish and wildlife management plans, geo-technical studies, and hydrogeologic reports. In the event of a conflict between the information shown on this map and information shown as a result of field investigations, the latter shall prevail.
