Gener rips through Camiguin
          Church requests donations for distressed inhabitants

                                                                                                                                   Less than a year after Sendong,
                                                                                                                               Northern Mindanao was hit again by
                                                                                                                               another storm.
                                                                                                                                   Typhoon Gener swept through
                                                                                                                               Camiguin Island’s five towns –
                                                                                                                               Mambajao, Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay,
                                                                                                                               and Catarman – on July 27, 2012, bringing
                                                                                                                               with it heavy flash floods that caused
                                                                                                                               extensive property damage especially in
                                                                                                                               Sagay and Mahinog. With the exception
                                                                                                                               of Mambajao, the entire island’s water
                                                                                                                               system has been effectively crippled.
                                                                                                                               One fatality was reported in Guinsiliban.
                                                                                                                                   According to a dispatch from Sagay
                                                                                                                               parish priest Fr. Jose Isagani Villamil, 26
                                                                                                                               houses were totally damaged, another
                                                                                                                               22 houses were only partly damaged,
                                                                                                                               and 1,683 families have been affected
                                                                                                                               by Gener. Furthermore, the storm has
                                                                                                                               laid waste to farms across the island,
                                                                                                                               stripping a good number of locals of
                                                                                                                               their livelihood.
                                                                                                                                   Fr. Villamil, the priests of Camiguin
                                                                                                                               and the Social Action Center of Cagayan
                                                                                                                               de Oro are appealing for supplies such as
                                                                                                                               food, potable water, medicines, cooking
                                                                                                                               utensils, blankets, sleeping mats, and
                                                                                                                               possibly assistance in rehabilitating
                                                                                                                               farmlands damaged by the storm.
