Fallen Deputy Memorial Ceremony
Come join us as we remember the 19 men and women who
have given their lives protecting the citizens of Dallas

Deputies from the Posse, Bicycle Unit along with the Citizens
Support Team Provide Security for the Cinco de Mayo parade
in Dallas. Parade went off with out a hitch, good job!

Deputy Vines of the George Allen Jail received a Letter of
Appreciation for supporting PES/CIS and warrants personnel
during a burglary investigation at the County Administration
Building. Thank you Deputy Vines!

Press Release: Fallen Deputy Memorial Service will be held
at 12:00 p.m. in Founders Plaza (Elm St. at Market). Please
take this opportunity to pay tribute and honor to the nineteen
Deputy Sheriffs who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department has teamed up with El
Centro College to offer classes to all County Employees to be
held at the Lew Sterrett North Tower Facility.


Mothers Day was very special this year for two members of the
Dallas County Sheriff's Department family.

DSO Rue Mayweather, assigned to the George Allen Jail, is
currently serving as a Command Sgt. Major in the United
States Army. Her son, 1st Lt. Kenieth Mayweather is also
serving in Iraq. Mom was able to travel to her son's location in
Iraq to surprise him on Mothers Day. Both were thrilled to be
able to spend some quality time together on such a special

On Sunday May 16th, the sheriff's department participated in
the 2010 Annual DFW Dragon Boat, Kite and Lantern Festival
on Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas. The team came in 3rd place in
the Men's Premiere Division and 5th place overall out of about
36 teams. More details in the up-coming news letter.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Department Honored 19 of our
Fallen Deputies on May 12th 2010. Established in 1962 by
President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of
Congress, National Police Week pays special tribute to
those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in
the line of duty for the safety and protection of
others. Ceremonies are held in Washington, DC, and in
communities across the country.

Honor 19 "We Ride to Remember" benefit will be held this
Saturday at Dallas Harley Davidson from 11:00am to

Chief Mona Birdwell. Birdwell is retiring after 30 years with
the Dallas Sheriff’s Department. She is an icon at the dept.
and will be sorely missed.

Memorial Day Weekend is coming up and it's one of the
deadliest weekends for drinking and driving fatalities. As we
head into the summer months with vacations, boating at
area lakes, July 4th and other celebrations, we want to urge
everyone to NOT drink and drive. We will be out in force
looking for impaired drivers.
On May 13, 2010 during shift change, Detention Services
Officers Scott and Blade who are stationed at the Decker
Detention Facility helped to prevent the loss of life. Their
quick thinking saved the life of a suicidal inmate. These two
officers are just another example of Dallas sheriffs
employees making a difference.

An 18-wheeler became a major headache for the sheriff's
department today. The overturned truck's cargo spilled out
into the median causing passersby to stop and try to scoop
up some free boxes of graham crackers.

livestock center located in Hutchins.

Press Realease: Dallas County, Texas–The Dallas County
Sheriff’s Department is offering “Virtual” welding classes to
inmates currently serving time in jail. This is a new program
which offers inmates a chance to learn a skill in hopes that
they will not re-offend.
Asst. Chief Wilson along with DSO David and Deputy Hines
welcomes 11 new Detention officers to the Dallas Sheriff's

Inmates take part in a Virtual welding Class as part of the
Sheriff's Department effort to reduce recidivism among the
inmate population.

A rededication ceremony was held on Thursday for the
Kennedy Livestock Arena located in Hutchins. The Dallas
County Sheriff’s Department has completed the expansion of
the center with no cost to taxpayers.
Crews have been cutting and laying pipe, tearing down and
putting up new fences and adding new animal pens as part of
the rebuilding project. These pens will hold more than twice
as many animals, up from 9 to 21. Chief Joe Costa oversaw
the project along with Capt. J. Hartgraves. Special recognition
goes to Lt. Paul Patterson Deputy Frank Lemaire and Deputy
Paul Stroud for the efforts in upgrading and completing this
massive project.

The facility was in serious need of repairs and upgrades and
much of the work was completed with donations and
volunteer labor from inmates from the state jail facility. We
are so grateful for the materials that were donated. The work
done on the facility is around $150,000 dollars but again it
was all accomplished with no cost to taxpayers.

The sheriff’s department plays a large role in caring for
abandoned and neglected animals. The citizens of Dallas
County can take comfort in knowing that all animals are well
cared while in our possession.

accepting applications from non- profit community agencies
that would like to volunteer their services in the Dallas

The owner of the stray goat, nicknamed Menelli, has come
forward and decided to donate it so that it can be reunited with
the great dane, nicknamed Judy.
Menelli left the sheriff's livestock center this afternoon and
was taken to the East Lake Pet Orphanage. So, Judy and

Detention Service Officer Ivy supervises laundry trustees at
the Decker Jail Facility. The laundry department does over
3.5 million pounds of laundry per year!

Detention Service Officer East conducts a search of inmates
returning from court. Inmates are to be searched whenever
they leave or enter their housing unit. The officers do this to
ensure contraband does not make it inside the secure area of
the jail.

The North Tower Jail received a preliminary walkthrough of
the newly installed smoke evacuation system by the Texas
Commission on Jail Standards. The Commission was very
complimentary after having run a smoke test on the six
floor. The Commission will do actual inspection on August

These part time Bailiffs (Pool Bailiffs) are gearing up to take the
state Jailors exam. This is Dallas County Sheriff Academy's first
pool bailiff class. Even though most part time Bailiffs are
certified police officers from other agencies, the state requires
them to have the same training/license as our county jailers.
