  pieces of rock) that moves from
  one place to another or settles at
  the bottom of liquid

• The movement of sediment causes
  the shape of earth to change

– Process of breaking down rock into smaller
  pieces (sediment)


Two Types
– Mechanical
– Chemical

Definition
– Physical breaking apart of rock
– Minerals that make up rock do not change
– Water and ice break down rock
   Mechanical Weathering
Examples
– Water in cracks of rock freezes and expands
– Burrowing animals break up rocks
– Plants grow in cracks of rock

One famous negative effect of erosion is
the DUST BOWL which occurred in our
country
              Dust Bowl
Place: southern plains of US
– Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri
Time: 1930s
Background:
– Lots of farming in the plains
– No modern farming methods to prevent soil
  erosion
Dust Bowl: The Problem in the
            Plains
Causes
 – Too much farming
 – No modern farming method
     soil was loose and like dust because there were no
     plants to hold soil down with roots
 – Drought
 – Strong winds
Negative Effects of Dust Bowl
Wind eroded the loose soil
Giant wind storm
– Blew dust all the way to Chicago
People got sick/died from inhalation of
dust
– People wore masks
Everything was buried in dust
Positive Effects of Dust Bowl
Lead to modern soil conservation methods
– People realized they can’t let soil erode
– People now plant cover crops to keep plants
  and their roots over soil year round
– People layer their crops so water gradually
  washes away
