We have zero tolerance for drugs, weapons and violence. Expect serious disciplinary responses to serious
violations for our policies, rules, regulations, and state laws.

The Board of Education, Administration, and Professional Staff of the Paterson Public School District stand
united in their expression of intolerance for the presence of weapons in our schools. We believe that our schools
must be safe and free from the danger that the presence of a weapon creates.

In accordance with Board of Education Policy, students who are found guilty of possession of a weapon in
school, on school grounds, at school functions, or on school buses will be subject to expulsion form school. To
expel means to be removed form the school permanently. In addition, criminal charges may be filed with the
Paterson Police Department. Any offense involving a weapon will be a Category III Disciplinary Offense.

A weapon is defined as any instrument of offense or defense which is capable of inflicting injury or death.

        Examples of items that would be considered weapons include, but are not limited to, the following:

        Guns (loaded or unloaded):
               Revolvers, BB guns, pellet guns, stun guns, air guns, dart guns, shotguns, rifles, toy gun, or
               “look-alikes”. Also defined as any device or instrument in the nature of a weapon from which
               may be fired or eject any solid projectable ball, slug, pellet, missile or bullet or any gas, vapor
               or other noxious thing, by means of a cartridge or shell or by the action of an explosive or the
               lighting of flammable or explosive substances.

        Knives: Pocketknives, hunting knives, switchblades, gravity knives, daggers, stilettos, dirks, box
               cutters, kitchen knives, razor blades, or any other instrument or object that may be used as a

        Other: Pipes, tire irons, billies, blackjacks, brass knuckles, sand clubs, slingshots, leather bands studded
               with metal, lighters, or other flames producing devices. This includes mace, pepper spray or like

Students/parents/guardians are to sign and return this Weapons Awareness Contract attesting to the fact
that they have read and are aware of the definition of a weapon. This further attests that
students/parents/ guardians are aware of the penalties that will result from bringing a weapon to school.
