					           NOTES ON MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE AND EFFICIENCY

Machine – a device which makes work easier. It does not do MORE work – it does the
same amount of work as you would, but the machine makes it easier.

       Work is made easier by :

       1. Changes the amount of force that has to be exerted (Inclined Plane)
       2. Changes the distance over which you exert the force (Broom, Shovel)
       3. Changes the direction of the force (pulley)

Input Force – the force you exert on the machine to make it work

Output Force – The force the machine exerts onto the object

Mechanical Advantage – The number of times the machine multiplies the input force

       MA = Output Force (has no unit)
            Input Force

EFFICIENCY

Compares input work to output work

Efficiency = Output Work x 100
             Input Work

Ideal Efficiency = 100%

Actual MA = MA in a real situation

IMA = MA with no friction

The more efficient the machine, the closer you will get to the IMA
