Desmond Doss was a soldier in the U.S. Army during World War II. Desmond Doss was awarded a medal of honor after heroically rescuing over 75 of his fellow soldiers and removing them to safety while under Japanese attack. The documentary, "The Conscientious Objector" is the story of Desmond Doss. On September 2, 2008, a two mile portion of Alabama Hwy 9 near Piedmont was named after Doss. Desmond Doss died in 2006.
