					          Matter
anything that has mass and
      occupies space
I. Substance – matter that has a
   fixed composition and definite
   properties
   A. Element – a substance that
   cannot be broken down into
   simpler substances
        1. Made of atoms – the
   smallest particle that has the
   properties of an element
   ex. Tin (Sn), Oxygen (O)
I.
     B. Compound (cmpd) – a
     substance made of atoms of
     more than one element bound
     together
     ex. Water (H2O), Sugar
              (C6H12O6)
II. Mixture – a combination of
    more than one pure substances
-- classified by how they mix:
         miscible – 2 or more
         liquids that are able to
         dissolve into one another.
         immiscible – describes
two or more liquids that do
         not mix into each other
II.
      A. Homogeneous mixture – the
      mixing is the same throughout
          1. Solution (soln) – two or
              more substances uniformly
              spread throughout a single
              phase
          Ex. Salt water
         -- solute what’s getting dissolved
-- solvent that which does the
                  dissolving
II.
      B. Heterogeneous mixture –
the mixing is not the same
         throughout
          1. Colloid – a mixture of
          very tiny particles of pure
          substances that are
          dispersed in another subst.
          but do not settle out.
          Ex. Gelatin, whipped
          cream, fog, smoke, blood
II. B.
         2. Emulsion – a mixture
             of immiscible liquids in
             which the liquids are
             spread throughout one
             another
         Ex. Mayonnaise, cream
3. Suspension – a mixture
   that looks uniform when
