HEAD START PRESCHOOLERS BEAT THE HEAT AND STAY ACTIVE
THROUGH YOGA FOR YOUNGSTERS
WHEN: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 10a.m. - 11 a.m.
WHERE: Davids’ Place Head Start Center at Jubilee Park
1000 South Carroll Avenue, Dallas TX 75223
WHO: Children ages 3 to 5, parents, and staff of the Davids’ Place Head Start Center
WHAT: Yoga for Youngsters promotes physical activity by involving children, parents
and teachers in yoga once a month. The goal is to improve flexibility,
concentration, focus and attention while decreasing anxiety and releasing stress.
Each 15-20 minute session serves up to 20 children.
WHY: Head Start not only focuses on a child’s educational preparedness, but their
nutrition and health needs as well. Every year, approximately 30 percent of
Head Start of Greater Dallas children begin the school year in the overweight
and obese categories. It is the goal of the organization to work with families to
help these children increase physical activity and learn healthy lifestyle habits.
This month’s record-breaking heat keeps children indoors, limiting their much
needed physical activity. In an effort to beat the heat and ensure the children
expend energy in a healthy way, Head Start is implementing the YFY program
at their centers this year. By involving parents and teaching simple yoga
exercises, families can stay active in any weather.
THE NEED: Until grant funding is approved to purchase materials, donations of resources
