Communications and Networking Report

Associate Director for Data Networking
Aundra Browning started on 8/28/02 as the new Associate Director for Data Networking
with full-time responsility for the operation of the campus production data network (Aundra
is pronounced Andre).
Aundra has a B.S. in Computer and Information Science from the University of Maryland,
European Division. Aundra served as a Network Technician in the US Navy for 6 years and
had the good fortune to be stationed part of the time in Bermuda. He has been working as
a Senior Network Engineer at WorldCom and worked on the NASDAQ stock market
account. He was responsible for managing the data networks for NASDAQ, which was the
largest commercial outsourced account at WorldCom. Aundra holds the Cisco certifications
of CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) and CCDP (Cisco Certified Design
Professional), which will be a big asset to the ComTech staff.
Infrastructure Subcommittee
The Infrastructure Subcommittee met on 8/29/02. Committee members from Textiles and
CVM are no longer with the University. I am asking for volunteers from these colleges and
any other college that isn’t already a member.
Ed Rogers distributed a status report regarding wiring projects and data switch upgrades.
The report detailed accomplishments for FY 2001-2002 and goals for FY 2002-2003.
Wiring projects completed in FY 2001-2002 include: Hillsborough Building, Pullen Hall,
McKimmon Center, Broughton Hall, Reynolds Coliseum, Jordan Hall, 1911 Building, USDA
Plant Sciences Lab, Applied Energy Research Labs, Research Annex West, Research
Annex West, Dearstyne Avian Labs, and Dearstyne Entomology Labs, Ricks Hall Annex
Switch upgrades completed in FY 2001-2002 include: Talley Student Center, Language
and Computer Labs, CVM phase 2, Nelson Hall phase 2, Research IV, Engineering
Graduate Research Center, Withers Hall, Dabney Hall, Weaver Labs, Patterson Hall, and
Research III
Wiring project scheduled for this year include: Holladay Hall, 129, Pulp and Paper Labs,
Alexander Residence Hall – Completed, Tucker Residence Hall – Completed,
Administrative Services Center, Scott Hall, Method Unit 1, Method Unit 2, Method Unit
3, Method Unit 4, Weed Control Labs -, Completed, Pfisteria Labs, Extension Technology
Labs, Mann Hall, Burlington Nuclear Labs, College of Textiles, Page Hall, Gardner
Addition, Peele Hall, Poe Hall, Watauga Residence Hall, and Avent Ferry Residence Hall
Switch upgrades schedule for this year include: CVM phase 3, Biltmore Hall, DH Hill
