Agenda Item #1 Welcome & introductions
Agenda Item #2 Review & approval of minutes from March 19, 2009 meeting
Dave Moll asks if there are any additions or corrections to the minutes from March 19,
2009. None given
Motion to approve was placed by Mr. Pluhar, seconded by Mr. Wills and all accepted.
Agenda Item #3 Student hiring update - Moll
Update to hiring a student assistant to replace Matt Harmin. Using online service to
collect resumes, but thus far Dave hasn’t received any that genuinely seem interested in
sustainability. Mr. Larson suggested that he talk to the Collegian. Announcement will go
out today to the Smittcamp students. Ms. Allen suggested he talk to Kristen in Career
Services. Going to try and get somebody on full-time by the end of the semester,
planning on having them work full-time summer. Going to have them concentrate on
putting together a Sustainability Day program (laying groundwork/framing).
Sustainability day would be student-run event as opposed to Earth Day which is
staff/faculty run. Need to have ideas ready for Sustainability Day (October 22) for next
meeting. Next meeting is Thursday, May 21.
Agenda Item #4 Earth Day final briefing—Pluhar
Held next Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in the Peace Garden. In need of one more person
on the groundwater panel. Solicited some moderators: Dave Moll will moderate the
transit panel, John Constable in Biology. Panels made up of people from CSUF,
government, businesses, will represent wide variety of viewpoints. Major change: have
17 exhibitors available for discussion with people that come by. Solar display presented
from engineering department. Worm composting display. To attract students, have
distributed pamphlets to professors campus-wide to encourage student participation in
Earth Day for extra credit. Have verified that College of Science and Math professors
have received the pamphlets. Working on getting advertisements in campus publications
& Fresno Bee, announcements have already gone out on Bulletinboard. Everything is in
place at this point, just need to insure that people will come. Engineering Department will
be there with a solar display. Open to the public, and parking will be relaxed in lot S
(located South of Bulldog Stadium) and possibly Q. Exhibitors can park in lot K or L.
Agenda Item #5 Fresno COG PTIS consultant presentation - Moll
Dave Moll will be sending out a link to an ftp site because of large file size. Already have
$36 million set aside to build a demonstration of the pod-transportation and CSUF
campus is at the top of the list. Study is a 2 year process. Fresno COG has Measure C
money for the study which is a $2 million dollar effort. Kimley-Horn Assoc are the
consultants out of San Ramon, CA.
Agenda Item #6 City of Fresno bicycle master plan (BMP) - Moll
Fehr & Peers is the consultant. Will be coming on campus to survey about bicycle use,
have a table at Vintage Days for a wide survey audience. Clovis and Fresno County have
both also hired consultants. New law states the cities must have a bicycle master plan in
place by 2011 in order to continue to receive highway funding. Bicycle Master Plan is
tied to street improvement.
Agenda Item #7 Recycling Center/County HHW co-location - Kao
Want to move away from Science II building. County has been trying to site a household
hazardous waste collection area in Fresno, were going to have it at Sunset Waste but it
got shot down. Have $700,000 to find a location, need to find one immediately, contacted
campus to place it here. Could tie into plan to move campus center, they would be
manning the station. If there is a site on campus, will be good for the public because it’s a
known site. Collections will be quarterly, no appointment needed for substances such as
paint can, car batteries, etc. Ideal partnership would benefit city and campus in multiple
Agenda Item #8 E-Waste Arrangements - Kao
Will accept some material on an appointment basis via Michael Burgess.
Agenda Item #9 Fresno Green Team report - Oldham
Skipped over Fresno Green Team Report
Agenda Item #10 Roundtable
David Moll - Greenhouse Gas Report Draft comments. Have final version of the
Greenhouse Gas Report and will put up as .pdf file. Will send the committee the final
draft for Mr. Pluhar to load. Doesn’t want to distribute in paper form on Earth Day, so
will have an email sign-up list to save paper and send digitally. Also doing an energy
study with Dick Smith, using 40% less energy on campus then used 10 years ago, not
counting solar panels. Plant Op efforts have really paid off, need to get that information
out there so people know there’s energy savings on campus. Solar power makes up 20%
of the energy needed on campus.
Nate Wills- Group of students who want to get the World’s Largest Recyclable Mascot to
set Guinness World Record with large bulldog out of recycled materials. Goal would be
to make it hollow so people could fill with aluminum cans. Planned to do May 9 on last
baseball game for people to drop cans—5 or more cans means free ticket to baseball
Amy Allen - Student Affairs - Every department has been asked to come up with a report
on what they’re doing for sustainability.
Briana McDonald - Started dorm Recyclemania. Will report quantity collected by the
bag. Will have table on Earth Day, sent out invitation on Facebook, over 200 people
replied yes. Trying to organize with Jan & Bud Richter center for community service
opportunity. Club seemed very interested in taking over recycling on campus. Paper
recycling would need to be done more often than cans/bottles. Students could help
educate others on proper use of recycling cans. Will need to make recycling bins lockable
and more secure. Over summer they will be altered, so there won’t be outside recycling
bins available. Suggested to make it a student project with industrial design students who
would design and build them on campus to cut down costs, and would help students build
portfolio of work.
Lisa Kao – nothing else to report.
Thomas McClanahan – Applying for two of the grants one for McLane Nursing and the
other Science 1. Cindy Matson will be working on getting NIH facilities improvement
Michael Mosinski – Working on a couple of water efficiency irrigation systems to help
address the drought and water issues on the farm. Planning ahead to put in so
infrastructure in place now so they can be ready for the reclaimed water system.
Chris Pluhar – nothing else to report.
Ronald Leach – nothing else to report.
Lanny Larson – nothing else to report.
Meeting adjourned at 9:30am. Next meeting will be Thursday, May 21, 2009. Location
TBA. Will put on next agenda, meeting make and send email.
