                            MEDIA RELEASE
Toowoomba youths receive prestigious leadership award

Two inspirational young people from Toowoomba will be recognised for their outstanding
leadership and team building skills at a gala awards ceremony at Parliament House this Sunday
      (13 September).

State Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine said the Toowoomba recipients, David Mengel
and Isaiah Reich, were among 65 young achievers across the state to receive the prestigious
      Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award.

“The award program is a great way for young people aged 14 to 25 to develop a range of
important life skills including teamwork, volunteering, decision-making and leadership,” Mr Shine

Mr Shine said the two young men should be very proud of their achievements which included
volunteering in their local communities and completing physical challenges.

“Over the past 12 months, Daniel has volunteered at his church, explored Perisher Blue, practised
shooting and swimming and worked as a camp leader to earn his Gold Award,” he said.

“Isaiah volunteered his sound and lighting skills at his school, explored Scotland and Paris, learnt
woodworking and metal work, went cycling and jogging and on an historical tour of Tasmania.
“These are outstanding efforts, and I congratulate Daniel and Isaiah on all they have achieved on
their journey to the Gold Award.”
Mr Shine said the awards ceremony would also acknowledge the dedication of volunteers who
ensured the young people were supported throughout the program.

“The Dukes program couldn’t go ahead without the hard work of our volunteers,” he said.

“We are recognising nine special volunteers who have each spent between 8 and 20 years
developing the program and supporting young people.

“This includes Tim Biddle who will be honoured with 10-year certificate for his committed service
      to the program.”
