With Labor Day Weekend just around the corner, make plans to visit Railtown 1897 State Historic Park
and enjoy a steam-powered excursion train ride through California’s scenic Gold Country! Holiday visitors
will enjoy a memorable six-mile, 40-minute round trip ride along the rails of the famous “Movie
Railroad.” Railtown 1897 SHP will offer steam-powered excursion train rides behind the famous “Movie
Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3 on both Saturday and Sunday then behind a vintage diesel locomotive on
Monday (Labor Day). Guests are encouraged to spend the day at Railtown 1897 SHP touring the historic
Roundhouse, listening to live musical entertainment by fiddler Dave Rainwater and bringing picnic items to
enjoy on the sprawling Roundhouse lawn. Capacity is limited for steam-powered excursion train rides so
guests are encouraged to arrive early. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the ticket
window beginning at 10 a.m. on the days the trains are running. Visitors are encouraged to call 209-984-

Foundation, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park offers year-round tours plus train rides weekends April-
October (selected dates only November-December). Known as “The Movie Railroad,” the Park and its
trains have been featured in hundreds of feature films, TV shows, and commercials. The Park is located at
the corner of Fifth Avenue and Reservoir Road in Jamestown, reached by highways 49/108. As of 1/2/12,
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park is open Thursdays through Mondays (except for
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day) and the Park’s operating hours vary by season: April-

With Gold Rush Days just around the corner, be sure to plan to take a ride aboard the California State
Railroad Museum’s popular excursion railroad -- the Sacramento Southern Railroad during the annual
heritage festival! Guests will delight in the sights, smells and sounds of an authentic, working locomotive
as it rolls along the levees of the Sacramento River. Appealing to all ages, the experience offers guests
with the chance to enjoy train travel from an earlier era. Those aboard are treated to a six-mile, 40-minute
round trip excursion along the levees of the Sacramento River. The train features a combination of vintage
closed coaches with comfortable seats, and open-air “gondolas” with bench style seating. Same-day general
admission excursion train ride tickets are available in-person at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket
office located on Front Street between “J” and “K” Streets in Old Sacramento on a first-come, first-served
basis starting at 10:30 a.m. all three days of the extended Labor Day weekend. Even during the Gold Rush
Days celebration, advance tickets to ride       the first-class (and air-conditioned!) El Dorado are available
online at www.californiastaterailroadmuseum.org and groups interested in reserving the El Dorado for a
regularly scheduled ride should call 916-322-7112.
