You are to conduct research and answer the following questions:

Key Questions:

1. What events led to the Gold Rushes in Australia (focus particularly on Western
   Australia, compare and contrast Eastern Australia to the Western Australian
   experience)?

2. What were the effects of the Gold Rushes in Australia?
     - How did Gold rushes benefit Australia?
     - Were there any negative impacts?
     - Refer to social, economic and political effects

3. What was life and living conditions like on the Australian Gold Fields? Refer to
   your observations and include photographs taken at Fields Find / Paynes Find.

4. Construct a timeline of key events during the Gold rush era in Australia.

5. After visiting the Fields Find Cemetery write a newspaper article as it would have
   appeared in 1899 that reported the Gold fields disaster as shown on the
   gravestone. Try and collect primary and secondary sources for your article

6. The following task is meant to spark your creativity: Select one from the following
   list below:

      A. Make a model showing one or more aspects of the gold fields. This may a
         be a typical gold fields dwelling, a gold mine, a scene from the Eureka
         Stockade, the Chinese on the Gold fields. The topic must be researched
         and accompanied by a well written explanation. All materials to be
         provided by the student!

      B. Get together with a small group and write a play. The play must be set in
         either the 1890’s or the 1850’s gold rushes. It should take about 10 –15
         minutes to perform. The written copy of the play should include carefully
         researched back ground notes, full descriptions of costumes and set.

      C. Write poetry/story book. This is for those who thrive on creative writing!
         You may like to write a number of poems, a long story, or a series of
         shorter stories. What ever you do, though, should be carefully researched,
         include accurate historical detail. You may like to accompany your poems
            with researched background notes. The booklet should be appropriately
            presented.

       D. Children’s story book: Write a story aimed at a young age level. It should
          be illustrated with original drawings. The book should be accompanied by
          a written report placing the story into its historical context.

       E. Research essay: Choose a specific topic of interest dealing with the Gold
          Rushes. Come up with a research question and plan of attack. Present
          your findings in the form of a report, essay or display. Word Limit: 2500
          words.

       F. Wall display of various aspects of the gold fields. Create an outstanding,
          artistically pleasing mural which clearly displays life on the gold fields. The
          mural must be accompanied by a report which places it into its historical
          context.

       G. Design a game/games – It must be educational, accompanied by full
          explanatory notes, and show a good knowledge of the gold rush era in
          Australia. It should be tested!

Criteria:

       o    Give special emphasis to Gold Rushes in Western Australia. Refer to
            places such as Fields Find, Payne’s Find
       o    Refer to observations/photographs from Warrdagga camp
       o    Include an introduction and conclusion
       o    Include maps, diagrams, graphs, tables and pictures
       o    Pay attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation.
       o    Make good use of creativity.
       o    Use a variety of sources: books, internet sites, interviews etc. You will
            need to visit your local library!
       o    Reference your work using the appropriate format
       o    If you are typing your assignment use a standard font (Times Roman or
            Aerial) 12 point font.
       o    Include a cover page with your name, teachers name, subject and due
            date. Be sure to staple your work
       o    Due Date: Thursday 26th September (2nd Last day of Term)
