Ten Warning Signs of Alcoholism: Observe, Detect and Treat For a Better Life
                                                           By Graham Timson

Alcoholism is a growing problem in the cities among youngsters and people of all age groups. This
problem has been existent among people in rural areas also. The signs of alcoholism help people to
determine if the problem faced by a person is alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse. Ten Warning
Signs of Alcoholism can range from making excuses to trembling in the morning. The warning signs
vary from one alcoholic to another. Alcoholism can result in drastic health problems that create
irreparable damage to the human body. Heavy drinking can cause serious damage to heart, brain, liver
and other vital organs in a person's body.

Understanding at least ten warning signs of alcoholism can be helpful in dealing with 'drinking
problem' and countering it. Serious chronic alcoholism can be cured, if the warning signs are detected,
promptly. Drinking alone is considered to be the first and foremost warning sign. Alcoholics drink alone
to hide their problems from the public eye and also they tend to consume more, while drinking alone.
People who have drinking problems also engage in making innumerable excuses for drinking. Chronic
alcoholism makes a person resort to drinking and they sometimes need to 'drink' always, irrespective
of the occasion. This need to drink is another warning sign that is very obvious.

One among the ten warning signs of alcoholism is the need to 'drink daily'. Chronic alcoholism results
in an alcoholic developing the need to drink, everyday. Alcoholics, sometimes, adopt drinking as a daily
routine and consume alcohol, everyday. They also consume it, more than once and become irritable, if
they are not allowed to consume it. They, create a condition for themselves, wherein they find it difficult
to function without drinking. Another warning sign is the ‘inability’ to control the alcohol intake.
Alcoholics become extremely dependent on alcohol that they are controlled by it. Some of them
develop the tendency to talk incessantly on the topic in public and some hide their ‘drinking’ problem
completely from others.

Another sign that ranks among ten warning signs of alcoholism is the display of violent behavior in
private or public. Some alcoholics become violent, when they are drunk. They transform into irrational
and violent people. Violent behavior that accompanies drinking can be a serious problem that has to be
countered, early. These violent episodes can cost them their reputation, pride and goodwill, among
friends and family. The next prominent sign is drinking secretively. A few people drink privately and
secretly, without the knowledge of the family and friends.

Ten warning signs of alcoholism include apparent mental disorder. Mental instability is a resultant of
drinking a lot. Depression is a common problem that results from 'alcoholism'. Anxiety and antisocial
behavior are also common traits that are observed in alcoholics. ‘Lack of focus' is also another sign of
alcoholism. Alcoholics face many problems pertaining to difficulties related to concentration, effective
communication and focus. They become ignorant of many issues and are inept to deal with those
issues, due to their lack of focus.

                                               How To Recognize Alcoholism
                                                       By Stephen Kreutzer

Alcoholism is a devastating disease that effects millions of people every year. Recognizing alcoholism
in yourself or someone else can be difficult. Alcoholism is defined as a disease that allows a persons
use of alcohol to interfere with their life and the basic functioning of their daily tasks, needs and
responsibilities.

The clinical way of looking at alcohol is by examining the amount of alcohol a person consumes. A
women who drinks more than seven drink per week or more than three drinks a day and a man who
drinks more than 14 drinks per week or four drinks in a day would be considered an alcoholic. A drink
is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor.

Warning signs of alcoholism may vary form person to person. Usually though these warning signs will
be obvious. The following list outlines some of these signs.

- misses a lot of work or school - losses interest in family, friends or activities - depression - drinking
to cope with any problem - insomnia - being intoxicated often - moody - drinking related health
problems

These are some of the noticeable warning signs. More serious behaviors can also serve as a wake-up
call. Risky behavior like drinking and driving should be taken seriously.

Alcohol when taken in moderation is a nice way to relax or enjoy a social engagement, where when
alcohol becomes a problem it can effect everyone who is close to the alcoholic. Some things that can
tell a person they may be having a problem with alcohol are:

- worry over not having alcohol or money to buy it - hiding alcohol so others do not know you have it -
often wishing to be drunk or get drunk faster - unable to stop drinking once started - hearing others
comment on your drinking

Alcoholism should always be taken seriously. If you or someone you know has a drinking problem
professional help is available in every community. Recognizing the problem is the first step to finding a
solution.
