At a public meeting on February 5, 2007, the Rockville Mayor and City Council and Rockville Economic
Development, Inc. (REDI) formally recognized local Asian business leaders for their invaluable efforts
which resulted in a successful trip by Sally Sternbach, REDI Executive Director to China. The trip
occurred in November of 2006. Those recognized included trip organizers Sharon Pang of the Global
Technology Council and Duc Duong of the Monte Jade Society. Others recognized included Rockville
business owners and trip participants, Stella Kwan of High Tech Consulting, Inc., Jack Cheng of MS
Technologies Corporation, and Corinna Shen of Seven Seas Restaurant, as well as the former chair of
The Monte Jade Society, Jeffrey Chen.
REDI’s goal for the mission was to encourage Chinese businesses to locate within the City of Rockville,
to specifically educate technology-based organizations and companies about the new Rockville
Innovation Center (RIC), and to identify resources to assist Rockville companies interested in expanding
into the Chinese market. While REDI met all of its goals, a trip highlight involved signing a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) with the China Association for International Science and Technology
Cooperation. The MOU committed both organizations to work cooperatively on projects of benefit to both
of their economies.
REDI’s Sternbach also spent time with the leaders of the Chinese National Science Foundation, the
Shanghai Technology Innovation Center, the Asian Business Incubation Association, the Maryland-China
office in Shanghai, The Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Center and the American Chamber of
Commerce in Beijing. Those personal contacts should prove invaluable as REDI
(www.RockvilleREDI.org) continues to build business bridges with colleagues in China.
