KES Robotics Application SY 2012-2013
August 22, 2012
Aloha Parents/ Guardians,
This year KES is fortunate to create a Robotics Team, under parent advisor/ coach, Nadine
Jacang. The Robotics Team is being offered as an afterschool enrichment program, meeting
two- three times per week. This opportunity is open to 4th- 6th graders; each grade will form its
own team, comprised of 6-8 students.
Participating in Robotics will foster the experience of solving real world problems by applying
math, science and technology. More importantly, students will develop critical thinking and
cooperative learning strategies.
After the application and selection process is complete, the Team will register to be a part of the
First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Program, which holds district competitions in late October/
early November. Each year, FLL teams around the world are provided with a thematic challenge
based on a real world, global problem that scientists face today. Teams prepare autonomous
robots to compete in the field, as well as prepare creative presentations to showcase their
research and innovative solutions.
If your child is interested in applying for the Robotics Team, the following information, which is
attached, must be completed:
Application Form
Student Self Checklist
Teacher recommendation Checklist
Parent recommendation Checklist and Parent Agreement Form
One page typed essay (minimum 100 words), double spaced and size 12, Times New

Although students will learn many valuable skills, a strong emphasis will be placed on
responsibility and commitment to the program, from both students and parents. The Robotics
Team will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-4:30pm. More meeting days and times
will be added as the competition approaches. Students and parents will need to make
arrangements for transportation on meeting days and competitions. There are no provisions for
bus transportation.
If your child is interested in applying for the Robotics Team, please complete the attached packet
electronically, along with your child’s typed essay, and email to shwee@ksbe.edu no later than
