H-B Woodlawn Jazz Band
2011-2012 Course Syllabus
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer of daily practice on your
instruments. Right. So, get ready to brush off the cobwebs quickly and dive into the
music making process. I am going to push you this year, more than ever before, with the
difficulty of the music and the demands for each person’s individual contribution to the
whole ensemble. Below you will find valuable information about grading, music,
uniforms, and fundraising. Please have your family read this syllabus, put the
performance dates into your home calendar, and sign and return the contract page.
Let’s have a great year!
Band means “together” - I expect the entire band to be present and on time for every
rehearsal. *Parents, please notify the office in the event of an absence (even a doctor’s
appointment). If I don’t see an Excused Absence as I take attendance, I must assume that
the student’s absence is unverified.
Concert participation is mandatory - Concerts are our quarterly exams. If there is an
emergency, please call the instrumental department prior to the concert and leave a
message at (703) 228-2216.
Be a team player - All students in the band program are vital members of our team. As
we work together to accomplish our goals, we will support each other by being present,
positive, and proactive.
Playing Quizzes/Auditions – Students will take a playing quiz per quarter.
Quizzes will be on current repertoire and scales.
Self-Assessments – After each performance, students will submit a written
critique of both their individual performance and the entire ensemble’s
Independent Project (20%)
Once a quarter, students (either individually or in a small group) will choose a project to
present to the class. Some ideas are a presentation on a musical subject or a mini-
performance for the class, but I’m open to suggestions!
Practice Log – Consistent practice is essential for getting better at anything. Jazz
Band members must practice a minimum of 50 minutes per week in order to
achieve maximum points.
Everyone in the band is assigned a folder with a corresponding number. Original parts are to be
kept in that folder and used for rehearsals and performances. Each student will also be given a
folder for practice parts. Original parts should never go home!
Students are to wear all black for our performances. For the gentlemen, this means a
black shirt, black dress pants, black shoes, and black SOCKS! For the ladies, it’s pretty
simple. All black.
1. We will be asking each family to contribute a $35.00 Activity Fee that will go toward our
initial trip and festival deposits.
2. We will have our annual Citrus Sale in the fall. Be on the lookout!
3. We will also have our annual Frozen Foods sale in the winter. Yum!
My dearest Middle School Band students, take this challenge! Work hard to improve.
Throw yourself into this music making experience. Do something as a team of which
you can truly be proud!

return this form to the instrumental department.
Please put important dates in your family calendar!
I have read the information regarding music classes and understand that there
are performances and occasional rehearsals outside of the regular school. I
received a calendar showing the concert dates for the 2011-12 school year and
understand that the director will let students know well in advance of any
changes or additions.
Included is $35 activity fee.____________
