"Geothermal Energy - DOC"
CeREES Capability Statement Geothermal Energy Specialist Skills Understanding the micro-seismicity of high grade geothermal sites. Geothermal prospecting. Assessment of low to medium grade geothermal opportunities associated with deep sedimentary basins and radiogenic granites. Opportunities for power generation using geothermal energy from oilfield production waters. Development of mathematical models to describe geothermal systems. Recent Projects Assessment of the geothermal potential of radiogenic granites for heat and power generation on behalf of a property developer. Geothermal potential of low enthalpy deep sedimentary basins – possible oil industry funding. Mathematical simulation of geothermal energy production – PhD project underway. Working with Newcastle University and the British Geological Survey on the UK’s only active geothermal projects the Eastgate and Science City Geothermal Boreholes. Innovative research into geothermal energy – science faculty funded research. Developing project on Ladakh (India) geothermal resource with University of Jammu (Kashmir), University College London, SUERC (East Kilbride) and ENI. Studies of microseismicity in high-temperature geothermal areas and associated with EGS stimulations. People Team of 10 academic staff, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students currently working on geothermal energy projects. Resources Experience of developing numerical models for geothermal systems. Specific expertise relating to the micro-seismicity of geothermal areas. Application of 4D seismic tomography and focal mechanism analysis to earthquake activity induced by hydraulic stimulation of geothermal fields. Hydrogeochemical assessment of geothermal systems. Other Hosted a visit from DECC including a visit to Eastgate Geothermal Project. Hosted a national geothermal workshop on behalf of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Track record in geothermal energy research since the Rookhope Borehole was drilled in the 1960s. Links to university spin out company http://www.geoenergydurham.co.uk/ http://www.dur.ac.uk/cerees
