III. Justification for Change
In December of 2004 the EPAAC committee approved a new framework for Area F in teacher
preparation. This framework included a series of three courses in education (EDUC 2110, EDUC 2120, &
EDUC 2130) that will serve as the universal core content for pre-service teacher education programs in
the University System of Georgia. This new framework also will include a Math course (MATH 2008)
and two additional Science courses (ISCI 2001 & ISCI 2002). EPAAC charged the education Deans with
the delineation of the core content and the appointment of three faculty committees to design the three
courses.
EDUC 2110: Investigating Critical and Contemporary Issues in Education was designed to
provide teacher educators with an education foundation which would include the humanities and social
sciences. EDUC 2120: Cultural Diversity was designed to prepare students to work with a growing
diverse student population. EDUC 2130: Exploring Teaching & Learning looks at teaching and learning
from a perspective that allows instructors to reflect upon their own learning experiences and use this
experience to better inform their students.
The revised Area F will allow the University of Georgia System Colleges and Universities to
move closer to creating a seamless transition from two year to four year institutions. The required
additions to Area F provided an opportunity for the Department of Elementary & Early Childhood
Education to review the current program and revise it to better prepare our students. The Music and Art
departments taught a course (FAED 3340) for the EECE candidates that incorporated both disciplines into
one course. Both departments expressed displeasure with that system because of scheduling and grading
problems. The EECE department revised the courses in our program to give the Art & Music department
two (2) additional hours which will allow those departments to split the content of FAED 3340 into two
courses (MUED 3340 & ARED 3309).
The old Area F for EECE majors also contained GEOG 1101, HIST 2111, and EDUC 2204
which are no longer available in the program. The EECE department feels that teachers should understand
the development of the aged children they will teach. Due to the new Area F, EDUC 2204 will no longer
be in the program. It is imperative that elementary and early childhood teachers understand the growth
and development of young children. Therefore, we have created a new course for our majors, ECE 3350 -
Child Development and Early Learning- that will allow our students to gain essential knowledge about
human growth and development. The focus of this new course will be on the development of children
from conception to age eleven (11).
The content lost in HIST 2111 will be covered in the methods block. The ECE 4405 (Teaching
Language Arts and Social Studies in Early Childhood Education) and ECE 4410 (Reading Across the
Curriculum) courses will be replaced by two courses that were once part of our program. ECE 4403
(Teaching Social studies in Early Childhood Education) and ECE 4404 (Teaching Language Arts in Early
Childhood Education) will allow the program to become more content solid while still incorporating
necessary teaching skills.
The above revisions do not change the credit hours for the program. We are loosing 31 hours
[ECE 2205 (3), EDUC 2201 (3), EDUC 2204 (3), GEOG 1101 (3), HIST 2111 (3), SCI 2201 (3), FAED
3340 (2), EDUC 3310 (2), EDUC 3308 (3), ECE 4405 (3), and ECE 4410 (3)]. We are gaining 31 hours
in our program [EDUC 2110 (3), EDUC 2120 (3), EDUC 2130 (3), MATH 2008 (3), ISCI 2001 (3), ISCI
2002 (3), ARED 3309 (2), MUED 3340 (2), ECE 3350 (3), ECE 4403 (3), and ECE 4404 (3)].
