The best way to improve your reading ability is, of course, to read. The student must

make a real effort to improve his speed, and if necessary his comprehension, with each

exercise. Too many students read passively and without judgment; they simply start the first

word and read through to the end. You should read a passage actively, selectively and

purposely. You must believe that you indeed have the ability to read faster and understand

more, and that you will.

Reading, like everything else in life, is best done when you are relaxed. They key to

improve it is concentration(注意). You must be willing to break some old habits and form new

ones. Extra body movement, such as turning the head from side to side, pointing at the line
with a finger or pencil, or moving the lips, should be stopped immediately. Reading is mostly

a mental process and a body movement helps neither speed nor comprehension. Then you should

see words as part of a whole sentence or paragraph, not just in isolation. This is why a slow,

word-by-word student often understands far less, miss much of the joy and excitement of

The student must learn to improve reading skills on their own, and not just when a teacher

is looking over his shoulder. Reading improvement takes discipline and effort. Don’t give up.

In short, things have been improving since carrying out the exploring study. In the past,

teachers always kept on explaining points in class. We students just listened and took notes, and

we were tired of this. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems which are raised by

the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoy different kinds of activities instead of doing

endless homework. For example, we go to the library to read books we like or surf the Internet for

various kinds of information. In a word. We now master the ways of study and feel very happy.
Best wishes! Wang Lin

五、作文、Dear Johnny,

I’m sorry to hear that you have been ill for many days. I felt happy when I learned you

got much better and left the hospital. You worked so hard that you had no time for exercise.

This is harmful to your health. I suggest you take more exercise in future.

Do not think taking exercise is a waste of time. In fact, exercise can build our body and

refresh your mind. After one or two hours’ exercise, you can study better. With a strong body

you can keep on working without feeling tired. My advice is that: Don’t sit at your desk all

day long, take at least one hour’s exercise every day, it will be helpful to you.

I hope you can take my advice and become much healthier.

Today is the date of that afternoon in April a year ago when

I first saw the strange and attractive doll 玩具娃娃) the window of Abe Sheftel's toy shop

on Third Avenue near Fifteenth Street, just around the corner from my office, where the plate on

the door reads. Dr Samuel Amory. I remember just how it was that day:the first sign of spring

floated across the East River , mixing with the soft - coal smoke from the factories and the street

smells of the poor neighbourhood. As I turned the corner on my way to work and came to Sheftel's,

I was made once more known of the poor collection of toys in the dusty window, and I

remembered the coming birthday of asmall niece of mine in Cleveland, to whom I was in the habit

of sending small gifts. Therefore, I stopped and examined the window to see if there might be

anything suitable, and looked at the collection of unattractive objects--a red toy fire engine, some

leadsoldiers, cheap baseballs, bottles of ink, pens, yellowed envelopes, and advertisementsfor soft

- drinks. And thus it was that my eyes finally came to rest upon the doll stored away in one

corner, a doll with the strangest, most charming expression on her face. I could not wholly make

her out, due to the shadows and the film of dust through which I was looking, but I was sure that

a deep impression had been made upon me as though I had run into a person, as one does

sometimes with a stranger, with whose personality one is deeply impressed.

  B. He was looking for a present for his niece.

  C. He wanted to buy some envelopes.

  D. None of the above is right.

4. The story takes place in the ____.

  A. early summer

Technology is the application (应用)of knowledge to production. Thanks to modern

technology, we have been able to increase greatly the efficiency of our work force. New

machines and new methods have helped cut down time and expense while increasing overall

output. This has meant more production and a higher standard of living. For most of us in

America , modern technology is thought of as the reason why we can have cars and television

sets. However, technology has also increased the amount of food available (有用的)to us, by

means of modern farming machinery and animal breeding techniques, and has extended our life

span via(经由)medical technology.

Will mankind continue to live longer and have a higher quality of life? In large measure

the answer depends on technology and our ability to use it widely. If we keep making progress

as we have over the past fifty years, the answer is definitely yes. The advancement of

technology depends upon research and development, and the latest statistics (统计) show that

the united States is continuing to pump billions of dollars annually(每年) into such efforts.

So while we are running out of some scarce resources (少的资源) we may well find technological

substitutes (代用品) for many of them through our research programs.

Therefore, in the final analysis the three major factors of production (land, labor and

capital) are all influenced by technology. When we need new skills on techniques in medicine,

people will start developing new technology to meet those needs. As equipment proves to be

slow or inefficient, new machines will be invented. Technology responds to our needs in

helping us maintain our standard of living.

  B. The three major factors of production-land, labor and capital are all influenced by

  C. Technology is the response to our needs.

  D. The United States is making great efforts to advance its technology.

8. According to the passage, people can live a long life with the help of ______.

In 1882 John L.Sullivan,a fighter of great power, won the world heavyweight championship

For a long time, people who fish have had to rely on luck to catch fish. Even big fishing ships,

fitted with radar (雷达) and modern equipment, have their share of bad days. Wouldn't it be nice if

fish could be trained to come at the call of a whistle the way some dogs are trained?

Well, the days of "fish whistle" may be just around the corner. Japanese companies are

working on methods that will train fish to return to harvest areas at the sound of an under water

The method works like this: First, fish eggs are hatched in a laboratory. Whenever feeding

time arrives, a whistle sounds. The young fish learn to return to their feeding areas at the sound of

the whistle.

Later, the fish are set free at sea, near special-made underwater "barns"(仓库). There, the

whistle-plus-feeding program continues. Being well fed and sheltered (保护), the fish continue to
live around the barn. So when fishing time arrives, all the harvesters need to do is to sound the

whistle, drop their nets, and draw in a lot of fish. Many countries have closed their offshore (近海

岸的) fishing waters to ships from other nations. With fish whistles and barns, Japan hopes to

Air pollution is caused by many things. Great clouds of smoke come from factories. Cars

send smoke and fumes (烟、废气) into the air .Burning waste fills the air with bits of dirt. Even

burning leaves add smoke to the air.
Sometimes, planes cannot find their landing spots through smoke. Smoke of all kinds is bad

to breathe and can do great harm to the body.

Still, we cannot live without air. We must find a way to clean the air we have.

In time, we may have factories that are run by atomic energy (原子能).Our cars may run on

smoke-free electric power (无烟的电能).Scientists are also working on new ways to help the oil

burned by cars from making fumes. Waste may be burned in the sand on ocean floors.

As I remember, my parents were very strict with me during my childhood. No matter how I

pleaded them to allow me to go out and play with other children who were at my age, the answer

was always the same: "Finish your homework first!" Moreover, my leisure time was divided into

several parts: reading, writing, listening to English, sporting and so on. In those activities, my

parents were my guides, partners, or competitors. But in my view, they were strict supervisors

who gave me too little freedom. Sometimes I got very unhappy, and cried, and shouted or opened

the door in a loud noise. But it was no use. In such an environment, I finished elementary school,

junior high school and became a student in a very famous university.

Nowadays, when someone praises me for my academic excellence, I am grateful for my

parents, since it is they who taught me a good study habit in my mind. When I succeed after many

failures, I owe it to my parents who have been encouraging me by saying "try, and try again".

Not until today do I really understand their patience, their consideration and their deep love

to me. What they gave me is not only the life of my body, but the life of my mind as well.

Little children are like young trees. In order to grow well, they need to be carefully irrigated,

fertilized and trimmed. The question is not whether the parents should plan their children's leisure

carefully, but whether they can do that properly. Some parents control their children tightly but

poorly. They don't understand them, and mislead their children. Some parents always spoil their
child too much. They give him what he wants, and forgive him when he has done something

wrong..It is not an easy thing for the parents to help shape their child into a true man. But with

love and understanding, nothing can be too hard.

Some people don’t mind being fat. In some countries a good round stomach is nothing to be

ashamed of. There is a West African saying: “laugh and grow fat”. Other people can keep slim

without any effort. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don’t like it. The question is:

what do they do about it?

Some put their faith in exercise. But the trouble with exercise is that it only works up an

appetite. Others believe in slim pills and special clothes that make you sweat. It could be nice if

they worked, but they don’t.

The only reliable solution is dieting. But what sort of diet? There are the extremists

who believe in a dramatic, thorough going attack on their waistline. There is another theory that

if you eat things like hard boiled eggs, apples with their skins on, and lean meat which are hard to

digest, that the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body

to get the energy to digest the food. For most of us these methods are too extreme or too eccentric.
The simplest system is just to cut down on the carbohydrates or, if possible, to cut them right out.

Dear Dick,

How nice to hear from you again. You want to known what is going on in schools in China?

In short, things have begun to improve since schools were called on to reduce learning load. I

don’t know about others, but I used to have to work even at weekends doing endless homework

and attending classes as well. Now I have more free time, I can follow my own interests such as

reading books, visiting museums, and taking computer lessons. In the evenings I can watch news

on TV or read newspapers. What’s more, I can go to bed earlier. As far as I know, everyone is

happy about this new arrangement of things.

                                                                Best wishes,
