Make sure any cuts or grazes are covered by waterproof plasters
Only eat food in designated areas
Read and follow guidance in the DfES guidance ‘A Handbook for Group Leaders”.
If young people or staff are ill after the visit advise them to contact a doctor and
explain they have had recent contact with animals
Clothing and Ensure that young people wear appropriate clothing including sturdy
equipment outdoor shoes (not sandals) or Wellingtons
Group control Pre-planning of activities and supervision
Close supervision, large groups split into small groups each with leader known to
young people. Overall leader remains in touch with all groups and can recall
effectively. No impromptu swimming or paddling allowed, see swimming risk
assessment
Supervisors must understand their role and the need for young people to wash
their hands thoroughly after contact with animals.
