                        Gender Oppression. A Option.

Leslie Feinberg writes, “Our struggle will also help expose some of the harmful myths
about what it means to be a woman or a man that have compartmentalized and distorted
your life, as well as mine. Trans liberation has meaning for you-no matter how you
define or express your sex or your gender” (p.5)

This essay will critically engage the issues of gender and sexuality that we have discussed
thus far in the course. Students will examine the social construction of gender and
sexuality as categories, seeking to define and differentiate between the nuances of each.

For instance, consider the ways in which individuals are deemed a sex category at birth.
What factors determine the biological sex of an individual? Consider, then, the ways in
which we are socialized to be a specific gender based on that sex designation.
Differentiate between sex and gender. Differentiate between gender identity, gender role,
and gender expression. Does sex assume gender? Is there a biological link between sex
and gender? Between sex, gender and sexual identity? Where did you receive your
information about sex, gender and sexual identity? Examine the primary institutions and
other cultural influences that shaped your knowledge about these identities.

Next, contemplate the passage above. In what ways do you think that gender oppression,
or rigid gender role socialization, has limited us as individuals? What are examples of
ways that transgender or other non-gender conforming individuals are oppressed in our
society? Give examples of the ways that non-trans people are also affected by
transphobia and rigid gender role socialization.

Last, make recommendations for ways to interrupt/combat/end discrimination based on
gender oppression (including homophobia & transphobia). How can we as a society
challenge this discrimination and create change?

5-7 Pages. You must use at least five references from course materials (this can
include films, SMYRC training, class discussions, speakers & course packet) as well
as one outside ACADEMIC source to support your arguments.

                                 DUE May 6th in class.
