The drug abuse among young adults between the age group of 18 to 28 is steadily rising
during the past fifteen years. During the decades gone by, the popularity of different drugs
have either increased or decreased over the years. For instance, the popularity of cocaine
has seen steady on rise in the 1970’s and the drug choice during the 1980’s was crack.
When coming to the 90’s, the drugs that grew popular were club drugs such as “Ecstasy”
and in 2000’s the “heroin chic” was most sought after drug. Nowadays the most popular
types of drugs are in the form of synthetic and prescription drugs.

Last year, some forty new underground drugs were discovered and identified by the United
Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and every year a new drug appears on the scene. In
addition to drugs, there is also alcohol abuse and addiction which is a common problem in
the United States. It is estimated that about eighty percent of the Americans understand
that prevention and rehabilitative treatment can help fight substance abuse and addiction
thereby leading to a productive and drug free lives. Therefore, the importance of drug and
alcohol rehabilitation centers cannot be underestimated. There are about 23.6 million people
in United States who are either living with alcoholism or drug addiction or both of them.
Only ten percent of these men and women receive treatment at a rehab facility.

As per the available statistics, in a publicly- funded alcohol rehab facilities the highest
percentage of patients that is about 14.4% consists under the age group of 20-24 years old.
Out of this, about 20% of those men and women who suffer from alcoholism also suffer
from high blood pressure and hypertension. The drug and rehabilitation centers in the
United States are catering to each addict either to drug or alcohol or both with the help of
professional team and other clinical staff in the field of addiction treatment.

Most of the staff at these drug and alcohol treatment centers consists of clinical
psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapist counselors,
mental health workers, independent detox specialists and other independent affiliates.
These drug and alcohol rehab treatment centers are providing inpatient and outpatient
treatment as per the needs and specifications of the concerned drug and alcohol addict.
Thus, it can be said that drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are necessary for receiving
proper treatment from alcohol and drug abuse in the United States of America.
