					Poetry Anthology Contract                                                               8th Grade LA Arts

All students are expected to complete all reading assignments and to participate in class discussions.

Below is the list of the four Poetry Anthology Components. Each component is worth 25 points, totaling 100.

1. Original Poetry: Each student will compile a personal poetry anthology that includes some original
poetry written by the student. The poems in this anthology must be related in some way, whether by theme,
or topic. Each anthology should be bound in a 3-prong folder and must include a title page, table of
contents, and a brief introduction explaining why the poems were selected and what they have in common.
In class we will cover the many types of poetry possibilities.

2. Literary Techniques: Each student will compile a list of literary techniques relating to poetry and their
definitions. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of a number of different literary techniques
used in poetry. Students should create a chart listing the technique, an example from a line of poetry, the
title of the poem, and the name of the poet.

For example:

3. Favorite Poet: Choose a favorite poet among the many authors read either in class or on your own. Find
and print a picture of the poet. Include an interesting or funny quote, anecdote, or detail about the author.

4. Recite: Finally, each student will recite a favorite poem of choice. (pg 655 provides helpful hints)

To earn a grade of:
“A” Complete all four components of the anthology.
       Compile a 15 poem anthology.
       Demonstrate a working knowledge of 15 literary techniques.

“B”     Complete all four components of the anthology.
        Compile a 10 poem anthology.
        Demonstrate a working knowledge of 10 literary techniques.

“C”     Complete all four components of the anthology.
        Compile a 5 poem anthology.
        Demonstrate a working knowledge of 5 literary techniques.

“D”     Not all components are complete.

Creativity in compiling this poetry anthology and folder may result in an improved score.
