Hours: Full time, including some weekend and evening work
Introduction
With Turner Contemporary opening in April 2011 we are now looking to appoint an
outstanding individual as the gallery’s Head of Development.
The Head of Development will be responsible for all fundraising activities across the
organisation. It’s an exciting management opportunity to join a new and ambitious arts
initiative, taking ownership of the fundraising strategy and working closely with the Director
and Trustees to secure philanthropic support.
We are looking for an individual with a successful track record of major gift and trusts
fundraising or relevant business experience. Ideally you will have experience of devising
and implementing fundraising strategies. Undoubtedly you will have outstanding
communication and advocacy skills, the ability to create and sustain positive and beneficial
relationships with donors, a flair for identifying marketing opportunities to promote Turner
Contemporary’s fundraising and a “can do” positive attitude towards the role and the
opportunity.
Purpose of Job/Key Objectives
To work closely with the Director and Board of Trustees to develop and implement Turner
Contemporary’s revenue fundraising strategy. The focus of this strategy is to attract the
financial support of high net worth individuals and trusts (including corporate foundations). A
priority will be to establish exceptionally high levels of donor stewardship.
Principal Duties/Tasks and responsibilities
Trusts and corporate foundations
Identify and research potential trusts and corporate foundations; prepare applications
to these trusts, drawing on expertise across the organisation to source content for
applications.
Be responsible for fulfilling all obligations to trust funders (including progress reports,
regular updates etc). Go beyond standard reporting practices to ensure that a strong
relationship develops between donor trusts and Turner Contemporary.

High net worth individuals
Identify and research potential major individual donors; identify and co-ordinate
delivery of a cultivation plan for each prospective donor
Establish excellent stewardship processes so that major donors feel thanked,
acknowledged and appreciated to a high degree; this will contribute towards their
sustained supported of the organisation.
Patrons
Set up and manage a Patrons scheme to secure donors.
Work closely with the marketing team to identify ‘Friends’ of Turner Contemporary
who might become Patrons.
Corporate sponsorship
Work closely with the Head of Operations & Resources and his team (who are
responsible for managing corporate hire of Turner Contemporary) to identify and
develop sponsorship opportunities.
Supporters of the capital campaign
Work closely with the Director to continue to engage supporters of Turner
Contemporary’s capital campaign, providing them with regular updates, ensuring
they are invited to events etc.
Budgets
Be responsible for setting ambitious yet realistic income targets for fundraising;
monitor progress against these targets and evaluate the effectiveness of the
fundraising strategy on a regular basis.
Set and manage the fundraising expenditure budget.
Provide the Director and Board of Trustees with information for budgets, the business
plan and forecasts in relation to fundraising activities and opportunities
Events
Oversee the organisation of fundraising events, with logistical and operational
support from the on-site caterers and Visitor Services team.
Marketing
Work with the Marketing team to develop printed materials and to identify promotional
opportunities to support the fundraising strategy.
General
Work closely with the Director and other heads of department as appropriate to
identify opportunities for project specific fundraising (e.g. temporary exhibitions,
educational projects)
Work with the Director and Trustees to ensure strong donor stewardship strategies
are implemented
Work with Trustees to identify potential donors from their own networks
Undertake high profile advocacy and representation on behalf of Turner
Contemporary, fostering close relationships with existing and potential supporters
Work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that an understanding of
fundraising and the importance of excellent donor stewardship underpins Turner
Contemporary’s work
Be an active member of the Turner Contemporary Management Team
Undertake any other duties as reasonably required

A certain level of flexibility regarding availability outside normal working hours is
required to attend events, meetings and private views
NB this job description is provided to assist the post holder to know their principal duties.
However it may be amended from time to time in consultation with you, by or on behalf of the
Director of Turner Contemporary without change to the level of responsibility appropriate to
the grading of the post.
Person Specification
Essential Desirable
Either up to five years significant Knowledge and interest in the visual arts
experience of fundraising in a charity or
Experience of staff management
equivalent relevant business experience
with some experience of the charitable Fundraising qualifications and/or
sector evidence of training
Proven track-record of generating
significant amounts of money
Experience of managing donor/client
stewardship to an excellent standard
Experience of working with senior charity
volunteers (e.g. trustees, governors,
members of a fundraising council)
Experience of working effectively with a
broad range of staff across an
organisation. Ability to establish good
working relationships with key
colleagues.
Ability to work on own initiative and
identify the priorities of a large workload.
Excellent communication skills, both
written and verbal
Ability to communicate in a diplomatic
and tactful manner with a wide variety of
people.
