Professional Development Fund
The purpose of the Professional Development Fund is to support staff activities that go beyond
the normal scope of duties. This fund will provide professional enrichment for the individual
employees which will also benefit the students, the University and the community.
Proposed professional development activities must accomplish one or more of the following:
Assist staff in adapting to constantly changing technology
Provide opportunities for staff to refine skills through programs related to their current
position such as computing, writing, public speaking, supervision, etc.
Improve interpersonal skills through human relations training.
Support professional activity such as conference presentations, research, and leadership
The Professional Development Fund (PDF) Committee may recommend funding of your
proposal based on the following criteria:
1. The project meets the purpose of the Professional Development Fund.
2. The proposal includes well-defined steps to meet its goal.
3. The proposal provides a basis for self-evaluation.
4. The proposal reflects adequate planning and consultation with segments of the
University that may be affected by the project.
5. Time and resource commitment indicated in the proposal will not adversely affect
the contractual obligation of the applicant(s).
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR THE APPLICANT
All full-time staff (non-faculty) employees at Southern Polytechnic are eligible to apply to the
Professional Development Fund. Temporary staff members are not eligible.
Proposal/Application Evaluation and Award
Proposals/Applications are evaluated by the Professional Development Fund Committee.
Funding recommendations made by the Committee are forwarded to the Vice President for
Business and Finance for final approval. Approval of Professional Development Fund
applications will be subject to fund availability.
1. Application materials can be obtained from the Human Resources Department, and the
Human Resources web site (http://www.spsu.edu/HR).

conform to the confines of the Professional Development Fund application form.
Incomplete applications and those not following the format or meeting the criteria will
not be considered.
4. Proposed activities should clearly go beyond the normal scope of the applicant’s duties
and demonstrate a connection to his/her individual professional growth. (See Funding
5. Submit completed proposal/application to the office of Human Resources by the
deadline date. Requests must be signed by the immediate supervisor and others if needed.
Each awarded project must be started within the fiscal year (July 1-June 30). No late
applications will be accepted.
6. Applicants requesting Professional Development Funds will be notified by the PDF
7. All Professional Development Fund recipients are required to submit a Project
Completion Report to their immediate supervisors with a copy to the Professional
Development Committee Chair upon completion of the project(s).
DESCRIPTION OF BUDGET CATEGORIES
The budget is a critical component of this application; consequently, it should be developed as
accurately and realistically as possible. The following provides descriptions and examples of the

Include all expenses involved in travel, including transportation costs, food and lodging,
following state guidelines and policies. If you are able and willing to use your department travel
expense allowance for part of this, include it in the budget narrative. Click on the following link

Materials and Supplies
This category includes all expenses for materials and supplies used for the project.
Include any relevant expense which does not fit into any other category.
Note: The Professional Development Fund cannot be used for the purchase of equipment.
If any revenue is anticipated from the project that will be used to offset the project cost, thus
reimbursing the Professional Development Fund, please provide an explanation on a separate
sheet and title it Project Generated Revenues.
