BuILDING, but is there enough to prompt Congress and the White House to fast-
track a federal engineering study critical to any actual construction? A new study
by the Great Lakes Commission and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Cities Initiative says
separating the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins to prevent the spread of
Asian carp and other invasives is both possible and a much-needed step toward im-
proving the Chicago Area Waterways System. The study is the most specific to date
of what it would take to permanently split the two basins where they artificially
merge at Chicago. With Chicago and Illinois under the hottest of spotlights as the
carp make their way up the CAWS to Lake Michigan, Alliance President Joel Bram-
meier says the study “shines that light in a new direction: toward transforming the
Chicago waterway into a resource of which everyone can be proud.” The public is
cued: nearly 8,000 Wisconsinites tuned in to a recent virtual Town Hall on the topic
to learn what they could do to help.
