The 2001 Graduates have taken their certification exams and all but one student have
reported a passing score. Written scores will be mailed to the program soon. All students
are working either in full time positions or with a temporary agency, except one
International student who returned to her country for a short visit.
The 2001-02 class began with 15 students. This included a MT who is retraining, several
laboratory workers taking classes for cross training and one student taking the second
year classes split into two years. Two students dropped during the quarter for health
and/or academic reasons and at least one hopes to return. When we begin winter quarter
we will have 8 students working toward the MLT degree and 3 who are taking portions of
The Phlebotomy class, MLT 214, was offered fall quarter and the numbers to date are:
MLT 214 (Lecture and student Lab) MLT 215 (Phleb. Practicum)
Spring 00 11 not offered
Fall 00 18 16
Winter 01 12 11
Fall 01 17 13

(Includes some MLT students)
The previous Essential / Standard requiring programs to have a medical advisor or
director are waived. The Advisory Committee composed of clinical lab science health
professionals will suffice. So, Dr. Hector Aldape will no longer be our Medical Advisor.
The Program will be gathering documentation and materials for their Self Study that is
due June 1, 2002, with a visit planned in October of 2002. This is the same time frame of
the college Accreditation.
Sylvia Orr, the HOPE Interim Dean, explained the External Review process. This
External Review will most likely take place during spring quarter. Berta reminded the
group this is a requirement of all Professional/Technical programs that receive Carl
Perkins grant monies. The review committee will be assembled with the input from
faculty and will be composed of about 6-7 people. An outside consulting firm will be
reviewing all the college PT programs on a three-year cycle. This review is different than
the NAACLS Accreditation.
Biotechnology offered Upgrading and training classes and information was mailed out to
all our affiliates. The Ballard HS Biotech Career Academy made a presentation at the fall
CLMA meeting and seems to be doing well. Their students do a 6-week internship
during the summer, and a few of our affiliates participated in this effort. Barbara Jackson
is the school district contact person. Julie Pearson is the Ballard HS mentorship
coordinator. (See handout)

Discussion took place on:
Point of Care (POC) possibly having it’s own class – could this be a part of the
Histology classes – could we offer some CE classes? Portland CC does this.
Pre-MLT classes – could this prepare students who need extra help with math and
English before they enter the MLT Program? We need to check with the CIS program
how they are doing a similar class.
Fran Lehr received a CDC grant and is developing a curriculum for Physician Office
Laboratories (POLs) and Waived Testing requirements. Shoreline faculty will check
with Fran about the possibility of using some of this curriculum.
