Definitions of Variables
Variable Description Background Myspace.com is an internet
Age Stated age of the individual displayed on the webpage “community” that allows individuals to chat, share
photos, and keep in touch with their friends. The
Picture To identify the individual on the webpage, does the individual use a picture of site allows a user to have his/her own webpage
himself (=1) or of something else (=0) which can be customized with different
Blogs This indicates the number of recent blogs the individual has posted backgrounds, site layout, and content. Then
each individual user can interact with other users
NumPhotos Number of photos the individual has posted in the official pics section on the Myspace network, mostly in the form of
sending messages, and leaving comments about
NumVideos Number of videos the individual has posted or marked as favorite in the official each other’s webpages or lives. Each
videos section individual’s webpage displays how many “friends”
Comments Number of comments (messages) posted by other users in the comments section the owner has on Myspace. Friends are
on the individual's main page important because one can only have limited
Marital Is the individual single (=1) or not single (=0) interaction with users that are not one’s friends.
College Has the individual completed college or is currently in college (=1) or is not in
college or did not complete college (=0)
Orientation Sexual orientation of the individual: heterosexual (=1), not heterosexual (=0)
Gender Gender of the individual: male (=1), female (=0)
Background The data were used in a regression model created to try to predict the
number of friends an individual user of the internet community Myspace.com should have
based on certain attributes of that individual. Individual is defined as a person registered
with the community and “owning” a personal webpage in that community. Attributes are
defined as characteristics of that individual of which values can be obtained and assigned
by viewing that individual’s webpage. Friends are defined as individuals who have
consciously agreed to have relationship together in the community which allows the two
parties greater communication and availability between their webpages. The source of
data for this study was collected by ************ and is based solely on his 48 Myspace
“friends.”
