POSITION SUMMARY

 Background: This position is part of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering which is one of five
 faculties at La Trobe University. The Faculty has approximately 4000 undergraduate and postgraduate students
 and over 50 undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

 The Murray Darling Freshwater Research Centre is a joint venture between La Trobe University, CSIRO and the
 Murray Darling Basin Commission and has the aim to provide the scientific knowledge necessary for the
 management and sustained utilisation of the Murray Darling Basin water resources.

 Primary Objectives:
 This position co-ordinates the laboratory and field activities required to meet the milestones of condition
 monitoring at the Hattah and Lindsay-Muclra-Wallpolla Islands Icon Sites under the supervision of the Project
 Manager. The role involves the planning, resource allocation, field collection, desktop management, and
 interpretation of data, and communication of results to stakeholders (this includes including reporting against
 project milestones, attending workshops, meetings and conferences) under direction of the project manager. The
 position also requires routine supervision of staff (up to and including HEO5) directly involved in the monitoring
 programs. This role may be extended to include involvement in other projects on an as-required basis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



At HEO6 Level, the occupant of this position is required to:

    1.   Co-ordinate and/or undertake laboratory and field activities required to meet the milestones of the TLM
         condition monitoring projects at Hattah Lakes and Lindsay-Mulcra-Wallpolla Islands under the
         supervision of the project manager.

    2.   Organise and lead more complex field trips, which may extend longer than a week, involve remote
         locations and/or require specialist skills.

    3.   Arrange logistics including equipment, transport, packing, and accommodation, and supervise other
         technical staff, including OH&S and environmental responsibility during field trips.

    4.   Contribute to the planning and design of research projects, including liaison with senior researchers
         and stakeholders where appropriate, and the design and implementation of sampling protocols.

    5.   Liaise with relevant research staff to arrange provision of appropriate specialised skills required for the
         various components of the project.

    6.   Coordinate and/or participate in surveys and assessments, collection of field data, processing of
         samples and management of data arising.

    7.   Make full use of available techniques and operate advanced laboratory equipment to conduct more
         complex analyses as required.

    8.   Undertake common statistical analysis and provide clear interpretation and presentation of data.

    9.   Produce technical reports required to meet project milestones under supervision from the Project
         Manager and/or Senior Research staff.

    10. Participate in the communication of results to stakeholders, including the preparation and presentation
        of oral reports, attending workshops, meetings and conferences, under the direction of the Project
        Manager.

    11. Conduct literature reviews, including sourcing references, and summarising for publication

    12. Participate in the implementation of laboratory Quality Assurance procedures

    13. Provide leadership in identification and resolution of OH&S issues
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Requirements

    1.   Hons degree in relevant field (or equivalent), plus relevant experience.

    2.   Strong organisational skills including the ability to meet multiple deadlines and prioritise project tasks
         for optimum productivity.

    3.   Extensive experience in and excellent practical skills in the collection of data and/or samples in field
         environments, including surveys and assessments.

    4.   Excellent data management and statistical analysis skills.

    5.   Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills.

    6.   Capacity to efficiently plan and lead field trips that span a range of ecological disciplines.

    7.   Demonstrated resourcefulness in solving technical and practical problems.

    8.   Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to facilitate effective teamwork .

    9.   Swimming proficiency (documented)

    10. Experience in effectively communicating results or progress to stakeholders through meetings,
        conferences, workshops or reports.

    11. Valid driver’s licence and experience with 4WD in off-road conditions.

    12. Willingness to routinely undertake fieldwork in remote locations that may extend over more that a week
        and include out of hours or long days.

Desirable Attributes

    1.   Demonstrated experience delivering projects that span multiple disciplines.
    2.   Demonstrated time and project management experience.
    3.   Demonstrable understanding of the TLM program.
    4.   GIS software experience.
