Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year
Yearbooks are pre-sale only this year, NO books will be sold after January 11, 2013

                                           Principal’s Message
We hope you will join us in sharing the excitement for the start of a new school year. More than a
thousand students attended summer school and our teachers and counselors continue to participate in
numerous workshops and collaborative meetings throughout the summer in preparation for the opening
of school. Our academic efforts continue to bear fruit with improved passage rates on the California
High School Exit Exam and increases in academic performance as we work together to create a culture
of student achievement. The accreditation visit this spring, by representatives from the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), validated our self-study and confirmed that North High
School is fully accredited.
We are pleased to announce that our “new” woodshop and computer aided design classrooms, rooms 61
and 62, are now ready for students. These rooms have been updated in every possible way and these
improvements are a direct result of a Career and Technical Education grant. Also, we are excited to
announce our partnership with Chevron and Project Lead the Way. This is a four year engineering
pathway that will begin with an engineering design course for freshman. For seniors, we have a new
Honors Geology course, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation in partnership with
California State University, Bakersfield, in which students can earn college credit. Also, we are excited
to offer Veterinary Science, a new elective in our Agriculture Pathway.
You may have noticed that our campus has begun to look like a construction zone. Construction crews
are currently installing a modern campus drainage system that will feed into a sump located between the
student parking lot and the varsity softball field. Classroom buildings C Annex and D Annex will have
dramatic infrastructure and cosmetic work completed during the school year. As a result, we have two
additional rows of temporary portable classrooms in place for the opening of school. Returning
sophomore, junior, and senior students, who had a locker located in C Annex or D Annex, will need to
see Kindra Taylor in the main office to secure a new locker.
Please review the enclosed packet for detailed information about the first day of school, your child’s
schedule, and a calendar of events. We ask you to pay special attention to the pink colored “Got
Yearbook?” flyer. Yearbooks will not be sold after January 11, 2013.
The North High School faculty and staff recognize this is a critical time in your student’s life, and we
wish to remain partners with you to ensure their success. We encourage you to take an active role in
their education because we know that by working together we can help your student thrive. Successful
students are often those who make a connection to high school and with this in mind, we encourage
students to get involved. We have numerous clubs, extra/co-curricular activities, performing arts
programs, and a full complement of athletic teams. Please call on our team of teachers, counselors,
support staff and administration if you or your student needs assistance.

Go Stars!
