To the Parents/Guardians of Waterbury Public Schools Incoming Sixth and Seventh Graders,

It is with great pleasure that I write to you explaining the remarkable opportunities that
your students will be able to take advantage of this coming school year. This year’s incoming
sixth and seventh grade students enrolled in select Waterbury Public Schools have been awarded
a seven-year federal GEAR UP grant in partnership with Naugatuck Valley Community College.

The underlying goal of GEAR UP is to foster a sense of awareness and readiness for post
secondary opportunities. GEAR UP staff will be working in direct collaboration with the
Waterbury Public Schools, community, and most importantly parents, to provide this cohort of
students the chance to explore post secondary educational opportunities as well as diversified
career paths.

GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, will
offer free services during the school day, after school, and during the summer to those sixth and
seventh graders enrolled in the city schools. The services will specifically follow these two
classes of students through their first year of college, offering a continued system of support and
post-secondary readiness services. The services offered will focus on small group mentoring,
objective-based content area tutoring and summer enrichment classes. All incoming sixth and
seventh grade students will have access to these services once they have been enrolled in the
program by a parent or guardian. All students that enroll in the program in the sixth and seventh
grades will be eligible for multiple scholarships, which they will be able to apply and use to
defray the cost associated with post secondary education.

Open enrollment in the program will begin in September. GEAR UP staff members in the
schools will provide enrollment packages including consent forms and application information.
