Welcome back!
Hello and welcome back to school! I hope you have had a lovely summer. I am
very excited to be teaching Class 2 and look forward to a fun and fulfilling school
year. Please feel free to come and speak to me anytime. I am keen to get to
know everyone and want to ensure only the best for your child.

The Curriculum
Our Topic
Our classroom theme this half term is the seaside and this is implemented
throughout the classroom and through a variety of curriculum areas.
Literacy
We are learning about stories with familiar settings. “The Lighthouse Keeper’s
Lunch” is the main focus for this unit.
Maths
Our objectives for Maths change regularly. Please see the Parent/Carer Notice
Board for an update each week.
Science
The Science topic this half term is Ourselves. We will learn about parts of the body
and the senses.
Geography
Our Geography topic is the seaside.
Art
Our focus in Art is on self-portrait.
ICT
We will be using ICT to make pictures this half-term.
P.E.
We will take part in P.E. twice every week. This will be on a Monday and Friday
afternoon. Please ensure your child has their P.E. kit on both of these days.
Music
In Music we are exploring long and short sounds.
R.E.
The topic for R.E. is Ourselves.
Areas
In addition to implementing the curriculum through taught sessions we also have
ten areas of learning in our classroom. The areas are Writing, Maths, Creative,
Investigation, Construction, Role-play, Computers, Smart Board, Sand/Water and
Reading/Listening. Tasks in these areas change each week and may follow up or
precede learning from taught sessions. This half term many of the areas will have
a seaside theme. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning
in these areas and are motivated by gaining stamps on their “passport” when
they have completed a task. Teacher support is always available and tasks are
differentiated to ensure that every child’s needs are met. You could encourage
your child at home by asking them which areas they have been in and by praising
your child for gaining stamps. The aim for the end of each week is a “full
passport” as this will show that your child has achieved the learning outcomes for
the week.

Curricular targets
The school curricular target for reading is to identify and blend phonemes
(sounds). Each day we have a 10-15 minute phonics session where we learn to
identify a new sound. We read and write words that include these sounds.

The school curricular target for writing is to improve our handwriting and
presentation. We will be using a new handwriting scheme to help us meet this
target.

The target for Maths is number bonds. We will regularly include this as part of our
daily Maths lesson.

Please keep checking the Parent/Carer Notice Board for information about what
we are learning each week. Suggestions regarding helping your child at home are
provided.

Water bottles/Book bags
May I take this opportunity to remind you that your child should bring their book
bag and water bottle everyday. Bottles should contain only water.


Dates for your diary
Wednesday 24th September           Whole school Open Evening 4.00 – 7.00
                                   Please note that this is not an evening for
                                   individual appointments but that this will
                                   follow later in the term. It will be a chance to
                                   look around the school and to see what is
                                   happening in other classes.

Friday 26th September              TRAINING DAY – school is closed to pupils.

Friday 3rd October                 Harvest (details to follow)
                                   Jeans for Genes Day (details to follow)

Friday 24th October                Last day of Half Term.

Monday 3rd November                Start of the second Half Term.

Wednesday 19th November            Class 2 Sharing Assembly
