                            Parent membership of Wyke Corporation

Dear Parent/Guardian

I am writing to invite you to consider standing for election to the Wyke Sixth Form College
Corporation. Let me give a little background.

The Corporation is the body which oversees the work of the College at the highest level. It sets the
College mission, agrees its strategic plans, and oversees the work of the College management.
Essentially it does the same things as the Governing Body of a school.

The constitution of the Corporation requires that it include two members who are parents of students.
This reflects the fact that the vast majority of our students are aged under 18, at least when they start.
The Corporation is currently seeking a parent governor to join Corporation from this autumn.

So what would be required of you if elected?

The commitment is not too great. Corporation meets five times per year. Many members also serve
on one of Corporation’s committees. These are currently:

     Audit  Remuneration
 Curriculum and Quality  Search
 Finance and General Purposes  Student
     Personnel

Most meet at least three times per year, with the exception of F&GP which meets monthly. Providing
Corporation members act honestly, in good faith and within their powers, issues of personal liability
are unlikely to arise although the College does maintain personal liability insurance to insure
Corporation members against individual liability for decisions of the Corporation.

In addition to formal meetings, informal contact with the College is encouraged by means of visits and
social and cultural events.

You would serve for four years or until the end of the academic year in which your child leaves the
College, whichever is the sooner. Your child must be under 19 years of age at the date of your
appointment as a governor. Criminal Record Bureau checks are required of elected Corporation
members on appointment.

As a Corporation member, you would be required to subscribe to Corporation’s policy that there
should be no discrimination at the College on the grounds of gender, race, social class, sexual
orientation, cultural background, religion, belief, disability, age or academic ability and to actively seek
to promote respectful relationships within Wyke.

Members who have served on the Corporation have found it a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.
If you wish to know more, please feel free to contact the Clerk to the Corporation, Fiona Bagchi, the
Chair of Corporation, John Wilson, or myself.

A nomination form is overleaf.

Yours faithfully
