You have done a great service by bringing disputes
among students of Bailey, Blavatsky and Roerich to the
forefront of a debate about the Ageless Wisdom. Like
you, I find their teachings complementary --
wondrously so -- and I know that your web pages
represent a major step forward in healing breaches
that are ultimately illusory. Thank you for your
work, and for bringing these pages of your site to my
You know, the telepathic rapport of the worldwide group never fails to amaze me. Last week I
was “idly” browsing through the various links in my browser and came upon the Agni Yoga
forum. I have not visited it for at least 6 months. When the screen came up and I saw that the
September message count was well over a thousand, naturally, I was curious to find out what all
the fuss was about. I soon found out.
I never knew HR harbored those kinds of feelings toward AAB and her work. I almost thought I
was reading the “conspiracy theory fanatics” attacks on AAB and her Luciferic Trust which are
prevalent in certain internet circles and literature (e.g. David Icke, et. al.). Anyway, I read for at
least an hour and was a bit disheartened to see the closed minds and “walls” which exist with
some people as well as the miscommunications.
Yet, paradoxically, you now send me this email about these new web pages aimed at healing
outer differences and instituting right relationship between these three messengers of the
Brotherhood. Thanks for doing such an outstanding job. It is not clear to me whether you have
assembled this by yourself or with the help of others, but nonetheless, thank you.
The cosmic joke for me is that I sensed something brewing in the ethers as I am sure others too
have sensed and then your email notice came through. I am also aware of the irony of all this due
to the fact that I have become quite immersed in a new teaching which I believe to be coming
from the Master P, who is currently living in New York City. As my past researches indicate, I
am not one to avoid controversy, but at the same time I am not looking for it either. I go where I
am led and for whatever reason I “stumbled” into this adventure almost two years ago. If many
esotericists are troubled by the inequities, prejudices and failures of the past, how are we going to
handle the even more powerful incoming teachings of a new century and a new millennium?
When it comes to Hierarchy we must be prepared to expect the unexpected, to be prepared to
readjust and jettison old thoughtforms. Hopefully we will be wise enough to know what is
salvageable, what is not, in order to make room for the new.
--In the Light and Love of the One Work,
Thanks ever so much for sending us the information about your website. As we
had been dragged into the Yahoo form recently (unbeknownst to us) through
uncontrolled emotionality, we were interested in getting some facts that
might explain why these people were yelling at each other. You website does
a great service and we look forward to exploring all of its content.

Thank you very much for this extensive WebSite. It really puts the whole issue into the LIGHT. I
am sure it will be very helpful to make people think on their own and heal and bridge the old
Thanks for sending this. It's always good to have a dialogue going, but it is also good to politely
agree to disagree. Most people will make a leap of faith in matters of faith and metaphysics with
the result that they have a hard time suspending their judgement about things they can hardly
verify for themselves.
You are probably familiar with my thesis how the messengers of the Masters are historically
interconnected and I have to admit that in my research I made some leaps of faith concerning the
authenticity of certain sources and that I also make some statements which I can not, as yet,
The only thing we can do is apply a certain intuitive logic and be open to be possibly proven
wrong. But 'proofs' in this ongoing discussion are mostly statements either derived from a) the
internal logic of one's position, which in itself was taken by a leap of faith, or b) the writings of
one's chosen authority, also believed in by a leap of faith. As such these proofs can always be
dismissed by those adhering to a different set of choices.
To harmonize all the different claims I came to the conclusion that most ammenuensa are not
objective in evaluating each other and that most people are committed to one teaching or the
other, not primarely because of the intellectual content of these teachings, but because of the
transformative effects these teachings had on their lives, which can create very deep emotional
attachments to the books and writers of them. These attachments in their turn can provide the
energy to defend, sometimes in the most elaborate and complicated ways, the teachings and
ammenuensis of one's choice. Because of that I sometimes find myself recommending a healthy
dose of Krishnamurtian ego-psychology to overcome doctrinaire rigidity, eventhough, in the last
analysis, I don't agree with K.
Thanks for the work done and I'll post a link to your discussion.
All the best
Dear Phillip, This is Risa D'Angeles, director of the Esoteric &
Astrological Studies and Research Institute in Santa Cruz, CA. I
would like to share several things with you.
First, I have just completed reading your recent posting on the
difficulties between the three branches of wisdom teachers - HPB,
AAB, and HR. It is brilliant, brave, courageous and timely. Two years
ago, having been part of the Agni chat group, a crisis occurred
concerning these very issues (I was attacked for following DK's
material and the information brought out about Helena's letters was
cited much to my surprise, aghastness, and complete dismay) which
made me decide to leave the Agni group. I therefore, personally and
globally (for all esoteric students), want to thank you for your
comprehensive study of this issue. I sat with your words and the
charts and delineated the astrological significances. I found even
more - a yod in Helena's charts (transiting Saturn at 8 Libra incl.
progressed Chiron/Sun/Neptune at 8/6/9 Taurus and inconj. Prog.
Jupiter at 6 Pisces and natal Venus at 9 Pisces. The transiting moon
was hovering around there, too). The Dweller was definitely on the
threshold when the 1952 letters were written. With the Chiron
involved, she may have felt wounded than anyone was sharing the Work
she was doing with the Masters, also. Which is no excuse. Just an
explanation for her personality anger.
Many of Helena's (Roerich's) planets conjunct mine though none of the
Scorpio. I have never been fully able to embrace Helena's work for to
me there was much too much emotionality in it for full comprehension.
I do resonate with Nicholas's work/painting though. But Helena's work
I shy away from.
Secondly, I looked also once again at your site and it too is
excellent, comprehensive and important as a source for esoteric
students to learn from. We have your Shamballa book which we use in
our classes. I look forward to your astrological profile of AAB. We
have done her chart but do not have a formal time on her though
several have been given.
I notice that you mention our Institute (Esoteric & Astrological
Studies and Research Institute: writings from Risa D'Angeles). I
appreciate that. I would like to point out that somehow the linking
address is wrong. I cannot get into our nightlightnews.com site from
your site. This is what the link address is on your site but it
includes a word (web) that is incorrect.
The correct address is www.nightlightnews.com. (the word WEB needs to
be deleted.) Perhaps you can make this correction. Also, we are not
only an esoteric web journal. We are a Wisdom School, in case you
would want to add us to another group.
I will end this email to you by again stating my sincere gratitude
for all esoteric students for your great and illuminating service and

I was aware of a divide between students of HPB and Bailey, as I noticed over time that either of the two
camps would never discuss or mention the existence of the other camp. From what you're saying I guess it's
gotten a lot more heated than that. What has surprised me though, is the divisions between the
HPB/Bailey/Roerich camps and the Steiner/Anthroposophist camp. I've been corresponding with one
Steiner scholar in particular, and he pointed out to me that Steiner believed the Theosophical teachings to
be "occult materialistic". Steiner apparently regarded Hinduism and Buddhism as genuine spiritual
revelations, but as Pre-Christian. Apparently according to Robert (my fellow correspondent), Steiner
thought that the Christ event was something unique. Robert also pointed out. He also mentioned that
Prokofieff's Agni Yoga (pp106-108) mentions that the Tibetan-Indian Occultists wanted revenge against
the West for overwhelming the East and their occultism.; and that HPB has said that Morya hated and
despised the white race. Can you verify this. I don't have this book in question, but perhaps the Adyar
library have it, so I'll check it next time i'm in there. I find a lot of the Steiner stuff quite fascinating but I
don't particularly like to label myself as this camp or that camp. Like yourself I find that all these teachings
has something of value. But I will take a look at your site.
Fascinating dialogue! I was never aware of the extent of this controversy, even though I have studied the
Tibetan's books daily for 35 years. You have written clearly and with great insight. I learned much from
your part of the dialogue. And then I read the controversial letter and other sections of that website.
I wonder if the whole direction could shift to areas that each school of thought might share in common----
like how do we lift and aid humanity through meditation, prayer, or invocation? How do we actually "live"
the teachings out in the physical plane? The teachings are surely useless if we do not live them and only
This is just a thought, Phillip. Thank you again for sharing this dialogue with us.
I am very interested in reading your research findings and thoughts
these three personas who have added so much to occultism! Its
needed to be done and I'm grateful that you are on this track. Sheldon
are intensely preparing for our departure to Australia for the ESCEF
conference, and as such I have no time to look into your work -- but I
savor its promise when we return.
Since Sheldon and I will be in Australia for the conference and for the
synthetic group meeting afterward, I was wondering if you will also be
and if so, would you have the time to give me an astrology reading (the
reading that somehow never happened -- probably because I wanted it
face and we ran out of time...).
If yes, then here is the data:

I would be interested in learning about the past few years, the present
the near and distant future.
Thank you for taking the trouble to send your email to me re the Alice Bailey
controversy. On the odd occasions that I have attempted to generate reconciliation
between the Adyar TS and the Bailey faction I have been frustrated by happenings that
have lent ammunition to hose who do not wish to see it happen. I am not without
influence in the TS here in Australia as I am a former Council member, a former National
Lecturer and Honorary Life Member of the Section. The latest fiasco has been in
Denmark where a pro-Bailey faction engineered a complete takeover of the assets of the
entire Section. Adyar HQ engaged in a legal battle over it and lost due to a defect in the
national rules. I doubt very much if Mary Bailey either knew of would have endorsed the
event, but that does not help to improve matters. As a result of my work on the
Theosophical Encyclopedia I was given copies of most of the correspondence and
documentation surrounding the affair, so do have a fair grasp of the matter.
The ideal resolution of the theosophical scene would be for the Adyar, the Pasadena, the
ULT and the Bailey organizations to amalgamate, but I think it is more likely that the
Pope will turn communist! Adyar is so much bigger and well-established both in
numbers and wealth that the others would feel certain of a great risk of losing all
Years ago some Perth members complained because the bookshop displayed and sold the
Bailey books. The manager wrote to Sri Ram and asked for advice. He replied that he
saw no reason why the Bailey books could not be displayed and sold, but would not give
them undue prominence! A master diplomat!
Years ago, when I was President of Perth Lodge I invited Mary Bailey to address the
Lodge and the event was a great success.
I wish you success with your effort, but don't hold your breath!
With sincere regards,
I want to thank you sincerely for providing such a wonderful

Thanks for sending us your article. I am all in favour of 'healing' the rift between
people and thank you for trying to do that.
It seems to be very difficultto examine what was said years and years ago, trying
to defend either one or the other. Could we just all agree to be searcher for the
Truth and not get involved in opinions ?
No human being can look behind the veil. To discredit anyone is not necessary,
as we are all seeing things in our own way. Let us all agree to differ and accept
our differences amicably. We can be happy that our paths cross from time to time,
so we can share our perceptions and views. When they do not cross, then at
least we can respect each other's findings without having to try to convince
anyone of anything.
Time is too precious - humanity needs now clear direction towards unitive
thinking. Let us look forward to build bridges, pointing out what we have in
common with each other in joy and reverence for life!
Best wishes for success in your teaching work !
I apologize for taking so long to respond to your letter. I have just had an
extraordinarily full month. I took a little time to explore and read the
material gathered on your website. It's indeed interesting that Alice Bailey
generated such strong feelings from Roerich and the students of Theosophy. I
am like you - I find value in all.....although I have spent the most time
with the Bailey material. It's interesting that those who consider
themselves students of the Tibetan often enjoy these other works and I
cannot recall ever hearing anything negative said by them about the other
works...unless it was just a personal preference for one or the other. But
when I lived at Krotona Institute of Theo. I became VERY aware of the
feelings toward anything to do with Bailey. I was warned not to even mention
the work. Mystifying...
I appreciate your efforts at reconciliation.... It seems like the whole
controversy is very 6th ray.
Thank you for your email of 27th September. I was very interested to read that you have
started a worthwhile project "aimed at healing cleavages between students of Alice
Bailey and H.P. Blavatsky". It seems to me that it is preferable that those interested in
exploring the esoteric philosophy do so with an openness that seriously embraces and
considers a wide range of views. I also maintain that each of us has a right to our
particular point of view .
Being aware of your stated wish to heal, when I accessed your web site I was surprised at
your comments about members of the Adyar Society (of which I am one) who you claim
are hostile to Alice Bailey. The majority of members with whom I discuss such issues are
apparently not hostile to the Bailey philosophy, most do not know about the original
cleavage, and probably would not see it currently as a relevant issue. Most people are
more interested in understanding the esoteric philosophy and its application to their daily
lives and the wider world rather than in personality conflicts. Of course, there are always
some who may be prejudiced and that is probably also the case with some Bailey (and
Roerich) followers, but that, inevitably, is human nature.
Some lodges and groups of the T.S. in Australia present talks, etc, that explore Alice
Bailey’s philosophy. Some theosophical libraries have, in their collections, books by and
about Alice Bailey. Some members have joined the T.S. because of their interest in her
philosophy and have been completely free to maintain that interest. You have given
courses and talks, in Blavatsky Lodge, apparently based on her philosophy. Yesterday,
Sarah McKechnie, Chairperson of Lucis Trust, NY, lectured in the Lodge to an interested
and non-hostile audience.
In view of this, I was very surprised to read comments on your web site such as; "Since
the 1920s, right up to the present day, generations of theosophists have gone on
perpetrating these negative notions about Alice A. Bailey........These individuals
demonstrate how conditioning affects us all.....This reflects the insidious conditioning
which itself has been working through the TS, even since the days of HP Blavatsky ....
the form of the TS has become crystallised and fanatical, obscuring some of the original
essence that underlies the organisation. Even the current head of the world Theosophical
Society, Radha Burnier, adopts these anti-Alice Bailey viewpoints along with many of
It is very disappointing to see such sweeping, generalised and hostile claims presented
without any demonstration of supporting proof.
In short, on the one hand I applaud your aim of healing cleavages, and appreciate your
support of the work of the theosophical movement. On the other hand, however, I am
puzzled as to how you could expect to achieve such ‘healing’ when your statements and
choice of material seem to work against it and seem to contradict your professed aim.
Best wishes, Naomi Blumensaadt

Dear Mr. Lindsay,
This is just to say thank you for your rebuttals and explanations regarding the criticisms against
I have been reading Ponder on This for five years, plus two other books more recently, and
today I decided to check out the internet to learn about her life (by googling "Alice Bailey
biography") . I was immediately surprised by the large number of sites criticizing her. I was taken
aback by these arguments, especially the ones about anti-Semitism, and took a break to, literally,
ponder on this.
I was glad to find your site and your writings. They are balanced, which is important in this
stuff. They also seek an all-inclusive approach to God, free of dogmas such as those of the
