In addition, passing scores on the CLAST exam must be achieved for admission to the Art Education Required Core in the junior year. Each student must be admitted to the Teacher Education program in the College of Education during the first semester of the junior year. An overall GPA of 3.0 is required in courses in art and art education as a prerequisite for Student Teaching (ARE 4940). All course work must be completed prior to student teaching. Students must go through the first year portfolio review and make up any deficiencies as a result of the review prior to student teaching. There are mandatory Art Education advisement meetings each semester beginning in the junior year. Students who opt for a semester in Florence, Italy as part of their program may substitute up to 15 hours of departmentally approved art and art history course work within the major area. At the beginning of the semester prior to expected graduation, all students should go to the registrar for an official graduation check. Pre-Art Therapy Track The Pre-Art Therapy Track is offered in conjunction with the Undergraduate Certification Program and includes additional course options in art therapy and psychology to supplement the art education major sequence. It is designed to prepare teachers of art to work with the physically or mentally disabled and individuals with special needs served by public schools or social agencies. Students in this track must develop competencies in observation, diagnosis, adaptation of art experience to special needs, and evaluation of the art learning experience. Students in the Pre-Art Therapy Track will qualify for art teacher certification by the state of Florida. In addition to the above requirements, students must take a minimum of 12 hours from the following: CLP 4143 Abnormal Psychology DEP 3103 Child Psychology DEP 3305 Psychology of Adolescent Development DEP 4204 Psychology of Exceptional Child PPE 3004 Psychology of Personality PSY 2012 General Psychology Or, Choose from other courses determined in consultation with an advisor from the Art Therapy Program. Students in the Pre-Art Therapy Track are placed in schools with special needs students for student teaching. Community Service Track The Community Service Track is designed for the student who is interested in community service and the arts, including museums, art centers, or other. The Community Service Track requires that the student take all required courses for certification with the exception of Student Teaching. In lieu of student teaching, students conduct a full-time internship in a community arts organization. Contact an advisor for appropriate placement. Unlike the Certification Program and the Pre-Art Therapy Track, students in the Community Services Track will not be certified to teach in a public school. Please note that all undergraduate certification courses in the Department of Art Education are offered once a year. Courses must be taken in sequence, starting in the fall semester.
