Student Clinical Training Requirements
Healthcare holds a special place in our society and requires individuals with an aptitude to care for others in
a professional manner while preserving dignity for both the person being cared for and for the caregiver. Patients,
residents, and families expect the healthcare team to pay special attention to their health, appearance, and hygiene.
Desirable qualities for healthcare workers include being caring, dependable, considerate, cheerful, empathetic,
trustworthy, respectful, courteous, conscientious, honest, cooperative, enthusiastic, and self-aware.
A clinical learning experience is a privilege and an opportunity to expand your skills. Students must work
when scheduled, be on time, and stay the entire shift. It is critical that the student has reliable childcare and
transportation arrangements with back up plans in place so that the student can fulfill the required training and
clinical requirements for this program and for future employment in the healthcare field.
Students should be aware that clinical agencies require students to pass a criminal background check, verify
specific immunities and pass a drug screen in order to have learning experiences in their facilities. In order to
prepare students for successful careers in healthcare, the Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College
Workforce and Economic Development Division will conduct the following assessments:
Students will be asked to complete an authorization form that will be used to verify information on social
security identification, date of birth, driver’s license, education, employment history and criminal records
for a period of the last ten years. The criminal information will include misdemeanors and felonies at local,
state and federal levels and the disposition of any reported charges. Information obtained from the
background check agency will be provided to the human resource department of a facility where the
student will have learning experiences however the student name will not be divulged. The facility has the
right to refuse to allow students to participate in training at their facility based on information obtained in
the background report.
A drug test will be performed at an unannounced time during the training program. Students must have a
negative result in order to continue in the training program. Students with a confirmed positive result that
cannot be verified as arising from legitimate reason will be dismissed from the program immediately.
Determination of Immunity
Students must provide documentation that they have had a negative tuberculin skin test within twelve
months of the start of a clinical experience or provide documentation of a doctor’s determination that the
student is free of respiratory tuberculosis disease. Students will be asked to provide a blood sample that
will be analyzed to determine antibody levels for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella
(chickenpox). Individuals with insufficient levels of antibodies will be required to provide documentation
that they have obtained appropriate immunizations prior to the start of a clinical training experience.
Documentation of seasonal flu immunization may also be required.
Appropriate Aptitude and Skills to Work in a Healthcare Facility
A healthcare professional in the classroom or clinical setting may ask a student to leave the program if it is
determined that the student does not demonstrate an appropriate aptitude to deliver suitable quality of care
in a safe and professional manner. The student must demonstrate proficiency in skills, that they know right
from wrong, and that they can make sound decisions, choices, and judgments.
Academic dishonesty includes fraud, forgery, knowingly furnishing false statements, cheating and
plagiarism and will lead to dismissal. Students must abide by the “Student Academic Rights and
Responsibilities” as approved by the KVCTC Board of Governors Policy # 9.
If it is determined after the class begins, that a student cannot fulfill the background, drug, immunization, aptitude,
skills or academic integrity requirements for participation in a clinical training experience, the student will be
dismissed from the program. Any fees the student paid for the training program will not be refunded.
I , have read, understand and agree to abide by the above program requirements.
