BACKGROUND

Since the 1995, Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing, two review
meetings of the Beijing Platform for action have been held, namely at the 6th and 7th
African Regional Conferences in Addis Ababa and Dakar in 1999 and 2004 respectively.
The Banjul Conference will be the 8th African regional Conference (Beijing +15).

The Beijing +15 review coincides with the 2nd African Union Commission Africa
meeting on Ministers of Gender and Women Affairs. -

The Implementation of Dakar and Beijing Platforms is critical in achieving Gender
Equality and women’s empowerment. One of the contributions of regular meetings by
the AU Ministers of gender and Women’s Affairs is to articulate women’s and gender
issues, which are aimed at empowering women through lobbying their governments to
develop policies and laws as well as initiate programmes and activities which take into
account the needs of both women and men.
