AP Spanish Language Syllabification
The purpose of syllables: The division into syllables serves two purposes:
1. it helps you to pronounce and spell correctly
2. it helps in the application of accent rules
I. Consonants:
1. Two consonants together must be separated (except ch, ll, rr):
ven – der per – so – na at – las pan – ta – lla
ter – cer lám – pa – ra her – ma – no pac – to
2. b, c, d, f, g, p, t when followed by l or r are not separated:
ha – blar ta – bla con – tra – to a – gri – cul – tu – ra
a – brup – to re – cre – o fe – bre – ro po – dri – do
te – cla res – frí – o a – pren – do me – lo – dra – ma
pul – cri – tud com – prar a – ga – de – cer li – bro
“Blue Cows Don’t Fly Green Planes Today, Laughed Ryan.”
3. One consonant between two vowels joins the following vowel to form a separate syllable (ll, rr, ch = one
syllable):
ta – za ma – ce – ta ta – lla ca – sa ba – rro
ca – ba – llo mi – sa me – cha pe – ro to – mar
4. Whe three or more consonants come together, the first two remain with the preceeding vowel and the third
consonant remains with the vowel that follows it (unless it is l or r) [ “Laughed Ryan” see # 2.]:
ins – ti – tu – to com- pren – der sas – tre
II. Vowels:
Vowels are categorized as strong ( a, e, o ) and weak (u, i ).
Hiato: two vowels together forming two syllables. This is a combination of two strong vowels together. They are
always separated as in the following examples:
ca – e – mos em – le - o a – e – ro – pla – no
re – a – li – dad ba – ca – la – o le – e – mos
Diptongo: two vowels together forming one syllable: note the following
variations:
a) combination of one weak and one strong or two weak vowels:
vio – lín au – la bai – le re – me – dio hue – vo
rei – no ciu – dad ru – bio cuan – do rue – do
b) if the strong vowel is stressed (has a written accent mark) there is no separation:
tam – bién bai – láis na – ció fué – ra – mos
c) if the weak vowel is stressed (has a written accent mark) there is a separation:
ca –í –da rí – en tí – os re – ú – ne
dí – a Ma – rí –a re – í - mos
Triptongo: three vowels together forming one syllable (one strong in the middle of two weak ones)
a – ve – ri – guáis lim – piéis
