KMSKA 2017
Masterpieces from the Royal Museum reunited in the Cathedral.
In 1559 the Church of Our Lady was re-named the Cathedral of Our Lady. An anniversary that will be
celebrated with the prestigious exhibition REUNION. During its 450-year existence, the Cathedral has
become a veritable treasury of religious art, which was painted and sculpted by renowned masters. Until
the French Revolution, they were commissioned to decorate the pillars, chapels and walls of the
Cathedral. In the wake of this upheaval, several altarpieces were transferred to museums, including the
Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

31/12/2012 FIVE CENTURIES OF THE IMAGE IN ANTWERP
The opening exhibition “Masterpieces in the MAS. Five centuries of the image in Antwerp” shows the
evolution of the image culture from the Middle Ages up to now by means of top pieces from the Antwerp
collections.
th th
The economic success of the port of Antwerp in the 16 and 17 century enabled an important turning
point in the world of arts. It was no longer just nobility and the church ordering art works, but also the rich
bourgeoisie asked for them, resulting in a boom. The greatness of Rubens and the numerous graphic
productions express this new development.
The fundaments of nowadays image culture and the international art market were founded in the city on
the river and Antwerp continued to be a popular city of arts. Artists from the Netherlands are still very
important for gaining insights into the current image culture.
The big opening exhibition of the MAS is a collaboration of the KMSKA, the M HKA and the Museum
Platin-Moretus.

As of May 26 MIDDELHEIM MUSEUM
2012 ANTWERP STEPS INTO THE FUTURE WITH THE OPENING OF A RESTYLED OPEN-AIR MUSEUM
ON 26 MAY 2012
Opening weekend: May 26 & 27
The Middelheim Museum is a unique institution in Antwerp, a city of art. The open-air museum displays
th
monumental statues from the 19 century to today in the green setting of a park. Pieces by artists such
as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Rik Wouters, Juan Munoz, Panamarenko, Chris Burden, Dan Graham,
etc. provide a unique overview of more than a century of sculptures.
The Middelheim Museum is constantly evolving, but in 2012, the Museum and its collection will undergo
a complete metamorphosis, more so than in any other year.
This is why architect Paul Robbrecht (b. 1950) accepted the two-pronged task of artist-curator, which
will result in the expansion and improvement of the Museum’s operations. A new, half-open exhibition
pavilion that he designed will be inaugurated with a prestigious exhibition by Thomas Schütte. The
internationally renowned artists Jan Fabre, Roman Signer and Ai Weiwei agreed to formulate a
proposal for a new acquisition for the collection.

16/06/2012 – PIETER BRUEGHEL UNSEEN | THE HIDDEN ANTWERP COLLECTIONS
14/10/2012
Together with Rubens, Pieter Brueghel is one of the best-known and most popular artists of the
Southern Netherlands. But Brueghel is much more than a painter of peasant scenes. His work is funny,
unbelievably creative, extremely diverse and very to the point. Brueghel’s influence on future
generations of artists continues, even today.
Naturally there are also the two paintings which Fritz Mayer van den Bergh acquired: the glowing Mad
Meg and the Twelve Proverbs. They have been carefully examined for this occasion.
Museum Mayer van den Bergh offers visitors a unique opportunity to find out more about the various
sides of this versatile artist in Pieter Brueghel unseen! Before Brueghel started to paint he drew
landscapes and prints in the 1550s. This exhibition highlights the various aspects of his artistic output
and is also a first in that all of Brueghel’s works in Antwerp collections will be showcased in one
exhibition.

15/04/2013
Balthasar I Moretus commissioned the grand total of 20 portraits from Peter Paul Rubens, including
portraits of family members and of friends of the Plantin family. In that sense one might say that Rubens
was the family’s preferred painter. Balthasar II Moretus probably hired Jacob van Reesbroeck (1620-
1704) for similar reasons. The archival document, Specific Expenditure 1657-1665, in the family archives
provides details about the financial agreement with Van Reesbroeck. He was commissioned to paint
several portraits of family members, including the flamboyant portrait of Balthasar III aged fourteen. We
will be showcasing the few paintings of Van Reesbroeck that have been preserved.

Spring 2013 ANTWERP’S GREAT LEAP FORWARD UNDER THE FRENCH 1794 -1814 (working title)
In 2013 we will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the inauguration of Willem Dock (the Great
Dock). The dock was built under French rule. After 1794 the city by the river had passed into French
hands. The French rulers, and Napoleon Bonaparte in particular, redrew the map of Europe and North
Africa during this period using Antwerp as an economic hub and military stronghold. The anniversary of
the docks around MAS is an excellent starting point to illustrate Antwerp’s position in Napoleon’s world
and also to show how the city radically changed, in economic, military, architectural and cultural terms.

2015 PAINTED OUT OF LOVE: FAMILY PORTRAITS BY RUBENS (WORKING TITLE)
Painting portraits may have been considered a lowly profession in seventeenth-century art theory and
Rubens is even said to have hated painting portraits, but yet he was one of the most able portrait
painters of his time. Among his finest and most intimate portraits are some portraits, which he painted of
his family: his two wives – Isabella, who died young and the beautiful Helena - and his children, Clara-
Serena's cheeky face and the life-size portraits of the older Albert and Nicolaas. He also painted his
sisters and brothers in law. And of course, Rubens portrayed himself as a young man travelling with his
brother in Italy and later as an older respectable gentleman, when he was already looking death in the
eye. The portraits which Rubens painted of his family were not commissioned; he painted them out of
love and they served as memories. For the first time these stunning artworks will be shown together and
in the place where they belong: the former home of Rubens in Antwerp.
The exhibition will take place in the Rubens House in the spring of 2015 and is coordinated by a
multitude of Rubens Specialists. The loans - paintings and drawings – come from leading museums,
including the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, the Musée du Louvre in
Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
