Class requirements The grade in this class will depend on a number of requirements. The requirements are the following: 1. 4 Illustration identification quizzes tests to be taken on your own at a specified time. 2. 1 short ( 3 page or more) essay relating to an agreed upon art related topics. To be e-mail to me. 3. A multiple choice quiz for many of the chapters. 4. Ten written exercises relating to different chapters in the text book. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON THE FRIDAY OF THE ASSIGNED WEEK. The assignments for the next week will be posted on the Saturday morning. Illustration Test Each test will be made up of 10 illustration identification questions asking Name of the Artist,(where appropriate) Title of the piece, Style or Period. Each illustration is worth 10 points for a total of 100 for each test.    You will be responsible for a given list of illustrations from each chapter in the book. The illustrations for each week will be listed in that weeks assignment with links to a preview page where you can see the illustration. These are the illustrations that will be on the illustration quizzes 1 through 4. You can click on those illustration numbers within the weekly assignment and it will show you the image with the appropriate illustration number from the book. So when you want to study the illustrations you can look in your textbook or look within the weekly assignment or both. You will be assigned 30 or so illustrations for each test out of which 10 will be randomly selected for you to identify. It is expected you will memorize all the illustrations for each illustration test and not use your text for reference. There will not be enough time alotted for you to use the textbook for the illustration tests.  The each of the illustration tests will cover the chapters indicated and are not comprehensive. The final test will cover only the material covered since the last test. You will be notified of the date for each illustration quiz. The four illustration tests will appear for approximately 10 minutes on the assigned days so you will need to arrange for this carefully before you start. Information sources Your textbook will serve as your primary source of information for the quizzes but in addition you will need to view other very helpful support information for your research paper at the U.W.F. library site. Multiple Choice Quizzes.  There will be a multiple choice quiz for each chapter. This will be taken each week as indicated in the weekly assignments. It is expected that you will use your book to help in answering the multiple choice quizzes. While the quizzes appear at the beginning of the week it is expected that you will have read the chapter thoroughly before attempting the multiple choice test. Discussion/Writing Exercises   You will be assigned a number of Exercises related to specific chapters during the semester. It is expected that you will write a response (at least approximately 1/3 page double-spaced) to the discussion questions, based on material in that chapter of the book, and this will be e-mailed to me. You should write at least a third of a page using the material you have read from the chapter. You should put it in your own words and not just copy the material from the book. Simply e-mail your discussion. Indicate your name and the chapter. dstewart@uwf.edu In addition put ARH-1010 in the subject box. 1. Short Essay You will be expected to write a short (3 pages or more ) essay on a topic agreed upon ahead of time by the two of us. An essay implies a focused vision so it is not appropriate to write an essay on some material that is too broad for a three page treatment i.e. Cubism or Rembrandt but on a more restricted aspect. Do not write biographies of artists, write about what is important in their work. You will need to get the subject approved by me before you start researching but it can be from any area of art history. You should consider using appropriate illustrations. These will not be considered as part of the body ( the three or more pages) of the paper. You will need to list your sources in a bibliography. It is expected that these sources would be internet sources in addition to other library sources. This bibliography page is not counted as part of the essay. You can use any internet sources for research on this essay but you are expected to use a scholarly approach in writing the essay. A good sources are: 1. The UWF library database. To find the UWF database go to UWF.edu/main. Click on Library Click on databases Choose Art Abstracts and follow the directions. Caveat. All writing related to this class should be academic and display a college level competence. Part of your grade for this class will come from not only your research but also your ability to write in a clear, intelligent, and coherent way and deal with the material designated in the chosen subject. You should be careful not to write in a style reminiscent of a chat room or personal e-mails with their abbreviations. Why do I need it for my online course? Answer: Java is a programming language created by Sun Microsystems. It’s unique among other programming languages because it was built to run on any operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.) Many components in the University’s Learning Management System are created with Java, and are constructed in a way that they can run right inside your web browser, using the Java Virtual Machine installed with your browser. If you don’t have a Java Virtual Machine installed, you can download the Java 2 Plugin from Sun Microsystems, and that will install everything you need (including the Virtual Machine) to make your online course run more effectively. You can download the Sun Java 2 plugin for free at http://java.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en Expectations for Academic Conduct/Plagiarism Policy: As members of the University of West Florida, we commit ourselves to honesty. As we strive for excellence in performance, integrity — personal and institutional — is our most precious asset. Honesty in our academic work is vital, and we will not knowingly act in ways which erode that integrity. Accordingly, we pledge not to cheat, nor to tolerate cheating, nor to plagiarize the work of others. We pledge to share community resources in ways that are responsible and that comply with established policies of fairness.Cooperation and competition are means to high achievement and are encouraged. Indeed, cooperation is expected unless our directive is to individual performance. We will compete constructively and professionally for the purpose of stimulating high performance standards. Finally, we accept adherence to this set of expectations for academic conduct as a condition of membership in the UWF academic community. ASSISTANCE: Students with special needs who require specific examination-related or other course-related accommodations should contact Barbara Fitzpatrick, Director of Disabled Student Services (DSS), dss@uwf.edu, (850) 4742387. DSS will provide the student with a letter for the instructor that will specify any recommended accommodations.
