Resident Safety is EVERYONE’S
Job!
• Help prevent slips, falls, and trips
• Be alert when you assist a resident
• Follow procedures to assist them
• Inspect resident’s areas for hazards
• Report any hazards promptly
• Clean up spills promptly, following proper
procedure
Lift and move resident safely
• Assess the resident and the move.
• Inform resident
• Position and secure
• Make adjustments
• Slide resident
Prevent medication errors
• Check all orders carefully
• Follow proper procedure for identifying
resident
• Be alert for possible reactions
• Read label three times:
– Against the order
– When preparing
– Just before administering
Follow the 5 Rights
• RIGHT resident
• RIGHT drug
• RIGHT dose
• RIGHT time
• RIGHT route
Transfer technique
Purpose
• To ensure the safe transfer of residents.
• Upon admission, all residents will be
assessed for proper transfer technique
• All residents who are non-weight bearing
or who have been determined to be
unable to safely use a sliding board, will
be transferred by mechanical lift.
Resident Identification
• Use two resident identifiers. (neither to be
the resident’s room number) whenever
taking blood samples and/or administering
medications.
RIGHT procedure for the RIGHT resident
Communication
• Process for taking verbal or telephone
orders and critical values that requires a
verification “read back” of the complete
order or test result by the person receiving
the order/result.
High Alert Medications
• Remove concentrated electrolytes
(including, but not limited to, potassium,
chloride, potassium phosphate, and
sodium chloride from the resident living
area.
Infusion Pumps
• Whenever an infusion pump is utilized,
(i.e. general use, PCA and intravenous),
ensure free flow protection.
Clinical Alarms
• Regular preventive maintenance and
testing of alarm systems.
