Survey on Pension Fund Expenses
The Survey on Pension Fund Expenses is designed to support the goal of effective plan
governance by providing sponsors of registered pension plans in Canada with an objective
benchmark to evaluate the level of operating expenses in their plans.
The Survey will collect expenses as recorded in the audited financial statements of the plans.
Participants in the Survey will receive a summary report and may order a customized analysis
comparing their plans to plans of comparable size.

Participation Agreement
1 Participation in this survey is open to organizations sponsoring registered Defined
Benefit or Defined Contribution pension plan in Canada.
2 All data submitted by Participating Companies will be held on a Confidential basis
by Fraser Group.
3 We will include your name in a list of participating plan sponsors.

Participating Companies will receive a summary report at no charge and may order a
customized analysis comparing their plans to plans of comparable size.
5 The Copyright Notice in the report shall read:
Copyright is reserved.
Redistribution in any form is prohibited without permission
except that Participating Companies may make copies for
internal use provided this Copyright Notice is included on any
copies.
6 The fee structure for optional report is as follows:
$535 (plus GST/HST) for 1 plan
$595 (plus GST/HST) for 2-3 plans
$695 (plus GST//HST) for 4 or more plans
Fees will be invoiced upon delivery of report.

sheets. If you have more than 4 plans, insert additional sheets and copy the Plan template.
Provide Brokerage and Custody expenses if they are readily available. Otherwise, leave blank.

Definitions
Expenses Expenses which are reported in the pension fund financial statements. Expenses incurred by
the plan sponsor are not to be reported unless there is an actual charge to the pension fund for
the service provided.
Pension Plan Consulting Includes plan design, communications consulting, valuations.
Record keeping, administration Includes communications to members.
and member service
Asset Consulting Fees related to asset allocation modelling and Investment Manager search or evaluation
Investment Management Fees paid to select appropriate investments.
Brokerage Fees Fees to process the purchase and sale of securities.
Custody Fees for safe guarding assets including registering and transfering title.
Audit Fees to provide audited financial statements
Legal Fees to lawyers and fees paid to regulatory institutions.
Governance Expenses to support effective governance of the plan such as meetings, educational
conferences, trustee allowances, etc.
Active Members Individuals who are actively accruing service credit or making contributions.
Inactive Members Individuals who are not active but are entitled to future benefits from the plan.
Pensioner Members Individuals who are receiving retirement benefits from the plan. Do not include members where
retirement annuities have been purchased from an insurance company.
NAICS North American Industry Classification System
Special Events Unusual events which significantly affect plan expenses in this year such as a Partial Windup.
