                  GENERAL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

                   THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 17, 2012
                     Selected applicants will be notified by the end of March

      The Application Form is an editable Word document. Please complete and save under a new
       file name, and send as an e-mail attachment to virginia.hecker@necmusic.edu with the
       subject line: “Abreu Fellows Application.” In addition to the completed application form,
       please attach your resume and essays. If you prefer, you may send these materials by mail
       (please see address below).
      The DVD, college transcript, letters of recommendation, visa status documentation (for
       foreign applicants) and application fee should be mailed to:

The following are required of all applicants to the Abreu Fellows Program:

      Completed Application Form
      Resume, including the following sections:
           o Education: colleges and universities attended, dates, majors, degrees conferred, honors
           o Employment: dates, organizations, your title, brief description of your responsibilities,
               city, etc.
           o Professional and volunteer experiences related to working with underserved
               populations, including dates, organizations, your role, city, etc.
           o Musical experiences with dates, including summer festivals, ensembles, competitions,
               prizes won, etc.
           o Musical training including instrumental instruction, theory, workshops, certifications
               (i.e. Dalcroze, Kodály, Orff), etc.
      DVD of two contrasting works (composers may submit scores and recording) and/or 10-15
       minute DVD demonstrating workshop/classroom facilitation
      Three essays of 300 – 500 words each, responding to the following:
           o A short, personal statement that provides a sense of who you are and what your
               professional goals are.
           o What attracts you to El Sistema? Why are you interested in getting involved now?
               How would you like to be involved? Have you observed El Sistema-inspired programs
               in the U.S.?
      What do you think are the elements of the Venezuela El Sistema program that will be likely to
       transfer easily to the United States, and which ones might be problematic, or need
       modification? Why?
      College/university transcript (a copy is acceptable) that shows completion of at least an
       undergraduate degree
      Two letters of recommendation
      International applicants:
           o Copy of current I-20 or visa, if currently in the US
           o TOEFL results (required of all non-native English speakers)
      $75 nonrefundable application fee; checks made payable to New England Conservatory

If the candidate advances to the second round, an interview in person or by phone will be required
(we will contact you to set this up). Interviews will take place late January through mid-February.
