Prepare to Shop for Mother’s Day at the
Northern New Mexico Spring Arts and Crafts Fair
Make your Mother’s Day and of all your gift giving easy this year. Visit the 40th Annual Spring Arts and Crafts Fair Saturday, May 6 on the lawn at Fuller Lodge. This year’s Arts and Crafts Fair will begin at 9:00 a.m. and it will last until 4:00 p.m. The Arts and Crafts Fair will feature items such as pottery, weavings, clothing, wood workings, paintings, jewelry, and other unique and wonderful works of art. With over 130 of the finest artisans in New Mexico at the fair, the possibilities are endless. Don’t forget it’s a great place to do that shopping for Mother's Day! The LA County Recreation Department will once again be joining us with a celebration of Viva Recreation Day at Ashley Pond with food and entertainment beginning around 12 noon. Volunteers are always welcome to help make the fair a success. If you have time to donate to this event either in the early stage preparation or the day of the fair, please call the LAAC office at 663-0477.

Guitars and Gateaux
The second Guitars and Gateaux evening at Fuller Lodge was an elegant evening of beautiful Spanish classical guitar and violin by Duo Guadalupe, with delicious desserts, in a cozy, café atmosphere. “ A wonderful place to bring a date,” was overheard. Don’t miss out on the fun. Attendance doubled from the first performance to the second.

The Many Facets of Larry Porter Wednesday, April 5, noon Pianist Lawrence Porter, Music Teachers National Association state winner, will include compositions from his competition in Paris and from his recent UNM-LA concert, including Les Jeaux d’eau a la Villa d’este and La Campanella by Liszt; Polichinello by Villa Lobos; Sonata for Piano Number 1 by Ginastera; and “Revolutionary” Etude and Nocturne in C# Minor by Chopin. He will also discuss the whole piano. Porter is author of the book The Piano Handbook, a valuable reference to consult before buying or restoring a piano, President of the Santa Fe International Piano Institute, a concert technician, teacher, organist and jazz musician. Brass, Ebony, and Ivory—Music for Trombone and Piano Wednesday, May 3, noon Trombone virtuoso and composer Ted Vives, Ph.D, will step from behind the podium to premier one of his trombone compositions and perform other exciting pieces with pianist Donna Smith. Dr. Vives has four music degrees; his compositions have been performed worldwide. Donna recently received her fourth standing ovation with Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. She performs classical and jazz and arranges music. Celtic Music and Dance Friday, June 9, noon Back by popular demand, the Albuquerque & Four Corners Pipes and Drums returns with Scottish dancers to herald the start of summer with classical and mystic music of the Great Highland Bagpipe and Drum Ensemble. Don Machen, who started the group in 1984, and Lynn Foster currently lead the band. Their fellow pipers are Rebecca Dempsey, Scott Archer (LAHS senior who performed in Scotland), Anthony Puckett, and John Rennie. Drummers are Jared Lyman, Caroline Spaeth, Christine Rand, and Margaret Guthrie.
Los Alamos Film Society and UNMLA collaborate to present films with original points of view that did not receive wide theatrical distribution. Join us for the last film of the season. Films are shown at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall at the UNM-LA Student Center. Admission is $5 ($3 with UNMLA ID). Los Alamos Film Society is a program of the Los Alamos Arts Council. April 20: THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL This is the true story of a bohemian St. Francis and his remarkable relationship with a flock of wild red-and-green parrots. Mark Bittner, a dharma bum and former street musician in San Francisco, falls in with the flock as he searches for meaning in his life, unaware that the wild parrots will bring him everything he needs. Produced, directed, filmed, and edited by Judy Irving; 2005; 83 minutes.

A High-Flying Week-End
The 9th Annual Los Alamos Kite Festival will be coming to Overlook Park on Friday, May 19 from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. and continuing Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Bring the kids. Admission is free with free kite-building demonstrations, music, and fun! Kite-building demonstrations are from noon to 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Bring your appetite too.
