Chairman’s Remarks:
The Annual Report this year must begin with notice of the sad deaths of David Lomas and David
Le Shirley. David Lomas passed away at the end of July after a prolonged battle with the effects
of diabetes. He served this Association for over 25 years in many capacities, and was also Hon.
Secretary of Croydon Schools’ CA for 40 years. He worked passionately over many years to
keep the Inter-District programme running. David Le Shirley lost his battle with cancer in
September. He had served SSCA as U15 and U19 selector, and also as Hon. Secretary. Detailed
obituaries are included at the back of this booklet.
The number of affiliated schools this year went very close to 350, thanks largely to the
affiliation of 6 School Sport Partnerships. The co-operation of these partnerships, together with
the support of the Surrey Cricket Board, has brought many more emerging schools into
competitive cricket, as well as encouraging old friends such as Howard of Effingham and
Weydon to return. The popularity of the range of competitions has also brought applications
from a number of London-based schools, particularly from Southwark and Wandsworth.
Although Whitgift dominated the competitions, winning 4 of the competitions for which they
were eligible, Reed’s and Rokeby took two of the trophies leading to National competition.
Reed’s, back after a break of 8 years, comfortably beat Whitgift to take the U14 Anderson Cup.
We wish them well in next year’s Lord’s Taverner’s National Schools Colts Trophy, which is the
only National schools hardball competition not won by a Surrey school this year.. The ESCA U11
was won by Rokeby School, Kingston, thereby Whitgift’s 2010 feat. It was Whitgift the took
both the ECB/ESCA National U15 T20 and the U13 David English Bunbury Cup.
It was also a good year for Surrey’s CAG squads with both U11 and U12 squads winning their
respective ESCA Festivals at Taunton, and the U15 squad beating Yorkshire by 5 runs to give the
ECB U15 County Cup for the second successive season. The U17 squad also reached the ECB
County Championship Final but lost out to a strong Yorkshire side. More details of CAG
performance can be found towards the end of this report
Ex-Surrey schoolboys were also well represented in the professional game. Jade Dernbach has
made himself an integral part of England’s one day side. Jason Roy, and Zafar Ansari were
among those who continued their successful development in a successful Surrey side which
gained promotion to Division 1 of the County Championship and also won the CB40 Final.
Many others, including U15 captain Dominic Sibley, played 2nd XI cricket. Sibley probably
deserves special mention for scoring 2 double centuries this year, one for Ashtead in the
Premier League, and one for Surrey U17 in the ECB U17 Championship semi-final.
Looking ahead, the Association faces the challenge of adapting once again following the demise
of the successful School Sport Partnerships. The future landscape is unclear, but the
Association must ensure the cricket is at the forefront of school sport.
In the last 12 months, the Association has been fortunate to receive a five figure bequest from
the will of the late Geoff Richards. We must find the most effective way of using this resource
for the benefit of grass roots primary school cricket.
In conclusion, I must thank Edward Handley, our new President, and my fellow Officers, not
forgetting the hard-working Val Baxter at Whitgift, for all their efforts and support over this
past year. Thanks especially to Tallan Gill who has managed the U13 competitions most
efficiently, but now moves on to take over as Director of Sport at Latymer Upper School. We
wish him well in the future.
                                                                                 Phil Everest
School Competitions Report
Inter-school competition continued to grow in 2011, particularly among the state schools. The
U15 T20 Vase this year involved 29 schools (45% up on 2010) necessitating an additional play-
off round, and the newly introduced U12 Plate was also well supported. A number of
applications were also accepted from schools in the Inner London area.
The increased support from the School Sport Partnerships was largely responsible for the rise in
T20 Vase numbers with schools entering local tournaments, although this did bring a drop in
numbers in the U15 National T20 competition as schools chose to enter at a more appropriate
In the U15 National, the Surrey finalists were once again Charterhouse and Whitgift. This year
the holders, Whitgift, batted first and struggled to score on the slow Ashtead wicket, eventually
being bowled out for 101 in the last over. Charterhouse began steadily but lost wickets
regularly and fell 6 runs short of their target. Whitgift then won through the Regional play-offs
to qualify for the National Finals at Arundel where they took on old rivals Portsmouth GS in the
semi-final. Having lost 2 early wickets, Portsmouth recovered to 70-2 when Bradley Erasmus
was introduced into the attack in the 16th over. As the batsmen tried to accelerate, Erasmus
grabbed 5-20, including a hat-trick, to restrict Portsmouth to 96-9. Whitgift made a good start
through Jack Lloyd (22) and captain Dominic Sibley (60 no) and went on to win by 7 wkts. In the
Final, against Shrewsbury School, Whitgift again fielded first. Smart fielding and accurate
bowling from Joe Murtagh (4-13) and Guy Lancefield (3-9) reduced Shrewsbury to 15-5 from 8
overs, a position from which they never recovered. Chasing a target of only 73, Whitgift quickly
lost Sibley for 4, but Lloyd (43 no)and Tom Walters (19no) saw them home with almost 7 overs
to spare. Congratulations to Whitgift on an emphatic victory.
As winners of the 2010 U12 Bunbury Jubilee Trophy in Surrey, Whitgift earned a place in the
2011 David English Bunbury U13 National Cup. Having won through the Regional phase,
Whitgift travelled to Somerset to beat Millfield convincingly in the National semi-final. King’s
School, Grantham stood in the way of Whitgift securing another National trophy. Heavy
overnight rain at Oakham put the final in doubt, but play started on time thanks to the efforts
of the ground staff. King’s batted first but after Erasmus removed both openers with the score
on 33, Nathan Baxter took 4-17 as the innings subsided to a total of 83. The Whitgift openers,
Erasmus and Kiran Beri battled through rain interruptions with a partnership of 63 before the
weather finally won. However, they had done enough to ensure a Whitgift victory on run rate.
In the Geoff Richards Trophy, Whitgift, the holders and National champions from 2010, took on
Haslemere Prep, Rokeby and St George’s College on Finals Day. Rokeby put down an early
marker with a first round win over the holders. They then won their two remaining games to
go through to the Regional play-offs, where they were again successful, and proceeded to the
National Finals of the ESCA 8-a-side Hardball Tournament at Repton School. Rokeby
maintained their unbeaten run in the Group stages, beating Millfield Prep on the way.
Sedburgh School provided the Final opposition, but could not prevent Rokeby emulating
Whitgift and bringing the trophy back to Surrey for the second successive year.
On the domestic front, Whitgift also won the U15 NatWest County Cup, the U12 Bunbury
Jubilee Trophy and the U11 Verney Cup, as well as sharing the U13 Watcyn Evans Trophy with
Shrewsbury House when the weather intervened. In the U14 Anderson Cup, it was great to see
Reed’s School back in County competition after a gap of some 8 years, and they were rewarded
with an excellent Final victory over Whitgift. Batting first, Whitgift looked comfortable at 96-4
with 10 overs left, but a careless run out caused a dramatic collapse to 98 all out. Reed’s lost 3
early wickets before Douthwaite (30) and Mawhood (42no) saw them home to a 6 wicket win
with 3 overs to spare.
The new U12 Plate competition was won by Weydon School, returning to competitions after an
absence of 5 years. In a tense final, they just edged out Wilson’s by 1 wicket. Another
returning school, Howard of Effingham, won the U13 Plate, comfortably beating Southborough
by 6 wickets. The U15 T20 Vase, although attracting more entrants, was disappointing for the
fact that 2 of the 4 finalists withdrew the day before Finals Day. The 2 remaining finalists,
Oakwood School and Shirley HS, having been rained off twice in July eventually managed to
play at Merstham CC in September. The Final was a fitting finale to the season. Oakwood,
batting first, looked set for a total in excess of 140 until a late collapse left them on 126-8.
Shirley began slowly but then managed to score regularly at 8 an over until 33 were needed
from the last 4 overs with 6 wickets standing. That became 16 needed from the last over, but
with only 2 wickets remaining. Tension showed as 4 wides were bowled in the last over, but
the task proved beyond the Shirley last pair as they fell 7 runs short.
In summary, it has proved another good season with success for Surrey schools at National
level, and a number of new names, not only entering competitions, but also making the roll of
Thanks should go to Jim Hammond, Tallan Gill, Duncan White, Simon Beck and Charles South
for all their help ensuring that competitions ran efficiently.

Surrey Cricket CAG Review:
For the second successive year it was the U15 squad that brought home the silverware. They started
the season looking to go one better than their defeat to Yorkshire in last year’s ECB U14 Final. After
mixed performances in the early season warm-up games, Surrey opened their competitive season with a
fine 7 wkt win away to Essex, Dominic Sibley being undefeated on 101. After the next 2 matches were
abandoned, a poor performance v Middlesex left Surrey facing the prospect of having to win all their
remaining 4 matches to qualify for the semi-finals. Another Sibley hundred (125no) and 4 wickets for
left-arm spinner Darshan Chohan set up a 69 run over Essex. A maiden century from opener Jack Lloyd
should have brought a victory over Sussex, but a late order collapse left the match tied. In the next
match, Lloyd then grabbed 4 wkts after Harry Allen’s determined 84no to gain revenge over Middlesex.
In the final match, Surrey had reduced Kent to 59-7 when rain washed out any further play, leaving Kent
needing to win 2 of their last 3 matches to qualify. However, Middlesex and Sussex both beat Kent to
keep the Surrey dream alive. Before travelling to the semi-finals at Oakham, Surrey won a 2-day match
v Yorkshire by 4 wkts, and also beat an U21 MCC Women’s side by 2 wkts.
The semi-finals at Oakham were rained off on the Thursday and rescheduled as 20-over matches on the
Friday, to be followed by a 35-over Final. Surrey took on Notts and restricted them to 106-7 before
knocking off the runs for the loss of 6 wkts with an over to spare. Taking on Yorkshire in the Final,
Surrey batted first and made a good start with Sibley (46) & Lloyd (65) putting on 81 from 94 balls for
the first wicket. Although wickets then fell, clever batting from Stiddard & Smith took the Surrey total to
195-6 from their 35 overs. Surrey kept the momentum with 2 early Yorkshire wickets, but the strong
batting line-up slowly took Yorkshire to needing 63 from 6 overs with 5 wkts left and England all-
rounder, Josh Shaw, well set. This had become 20 needed from 14 balls when a fierce drive was
deflected by Chris Leith onto the bowler’s stumps to run out Shaw(69) in the unluckiest of
circumstances. Yorkshire could not pick up the momentum and Surrey won by 5 runs to become only
the 3rd side to win in successive years.
The U17’s did their best to emulate their juniors, reaching the semi-finals of both the 1-day and 2-day
competitions. In the 1-day semi Surrey lost to Hampshire, but a double century from U15 opener
Dominic Sibley in the 2-day semi crushed Worcestershire. Sibley was one of a number of young players,
including Jack Scriven, Jack Winslade, Will Rollings & Harshil Patel, who performed well in the squad this
year but will still be available next year.
The U14’s had an average season, failing to reach the National Finals after losing a group match to
Cambridgeshire when fielding a weakened side. Robbie Hughes and Oscar Kolk were the most
consistent batters, both averaging over 50. Satbir Mann led the bowlers with 23 wickets, and he was
well-supported by spinners Chris Jones and Nick Winder.
Three rained-off matches and 2 late defeats by Kent and Middlesex condemned the U13’s to 4th place in
their ECB Regional Competition. Mathew Clarke hit an unbeaten century in the abandoned match v
Suffolk, while Rajan Soni and Kiran Beri also made significant contributions with the bat.
After a poor start losing their first 3 matches, the U12 squad recovered to have a good season, winning
the ESCA U12 Festival at Taunton. Wins over Hampshire and a strong Lancashire side got Surrey off to a
great start in the Festival and they remained undefeated. William Jacks was awarded Player of the
Festival, and was well-supported with the bat throughout the season by Alistair Curran & Freddy Austin.
The U11’s also won their Festival at Taunton in a season where they won 12 of their 18 matches.
Nathan Tilley (101* v Lancs), Harriharan Aravinthan and Jamie Smith all scored consistently with the bat,
while Liam Head was the outstanding bowler at Taunton with 10 wickets in 4 matches.
The U10’s, winning 12 out of 15 matches, and the U9’s with 5 wins from 6, continued their development
with a selection of inter-county and inner county matches.
