Change-over to Continental SC20 Clean at Milch-
Union Hocheifel
 Continental industrial tyre SC20 Clean scores with cost-effectiveness
 Product advantages compared to black industrial tires

Hanover/ Pronsfeld, July 2012. Industrial Super Elastic tyres from Continental have won the
approval of Milch-Union Hocheifel. Following a test phase, the company’s forklifts will
gradually change over to the Continental SC20 Clean. Clean tyres are particularly useful
where cleanliness is of paramount importance, e.g. in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food
industry. However, further benefits such as low operating costs, long service life, high
stability and low rolling resistance are also of major importance.

One of the twelve important customer segments for Continental’s Industrial Tyrebusiness unit
is the food industry. Cleanliness has utmost priority when it comes to food. At Milch-Union
Hocheifel, the systems and floors undergo continual cleaning. Nevertheless, the heavy loads
have to be moved by machines. For example, pallets of packaging material are required, and
end products are transported to the warehouse. Black tyre residue on the clean floors might
easily be carried into the production facility and then onto products, which is why clean tyres
are used.

“ Overall costs play an important role with these highly-specialized products as well,” said
Dr. Michael A. Märtens, head of the Continental Industrial Tyres business unit. “The
purchase price is only one element and operators also take into account the mileage, rolling
resistance and the resulting energy consumption and maintenance outlay.”
The Continental SC20 has the advantage of low whole life costs. . Continental produce a
range of Super Elastics tyres and the Clean version sets the benchmark for cost-
effectiveness and environmental benefits. Its profile ensures outstanding handling
characteristics; the low rolling resistance guarantees low energy consumption and the large

tread volume promises a long service life. This innovative tyre is available in a Clean design
for wheel rims with 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 24 inch diameters.

One of the most modern companies in the European milk industry is now using a growing
number of Continental SC20 Clean throughout its production plants. In its Pronsfeld plant
alone, Milch-Union-Hocheifel eG transforms more than three million litres of milk from
160,000 cows into dairy products every day. These are then sold in Germany but the north
east of France as well as Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and almost all other EU
member states.

“Milch-Union Hocheifel are especially pleased with the mileage of the SC20 Clean,” says
Wolfgang Rommel, Head of Marketing and Communication at Milch-Union. “The mileage and
operational reliability are good, there are no problems, no tyre failures and the service is
good. More and more of our forklifts run on the SC20 Clean as Milch-Union Hocheifel wants
to ensure optimum performance, both from an economic as well as an ecological

On the 31-hectare production facility , more than one billion kilograms of milk have been

“shoes”. The tyre sizes in use at MUH are 125/75-8, 180/70-8 and 225/75-10, The company
also uses around 60 dedicated trucks from MAN, Mercedes and Iveco, and 42 forklifts. These
are all maintained in line with the latest standards and serviced by the company’s own
